'American Vampires': UE on TV

I'm watching 'American Vampires' on VH1 right now. One of the three 'extreme lifestyle' characters (not actual vampires) that they follow around is an urban explorer named Joe. We get to check out the Freedom Tunnel, part of the subway system. Now, I find Joe an obnoxious character, partly because he is a self-satisfied dork, but especially because he is disrespectful of the people who live and work in some of the places he visits (homeless folks, graff artists, 'psychos') . But there's a couple of real questions here:

- how do we deal with the fact that we're privileged, middle-class voyeurs in places where the genuinely desperate and disadvantaged live? Is this an issue people have thought about and dealt with?

- what are the ethics of UE on TV? My knee-jerk reaction is that publicity ruins the game for the rest of us, but are there advantages to this type of exposure? In other words, is UE a democracy or a secret society?

Is this the same episode that has tatooing at the beginning? That's what's on now but I missed the opening and can't tell if it's the same show.

I didn't even know the campus got VH1 until now, I guess I don't watch enough TV.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I have thought about it and ethics are very important to me personally in my studies and in life outside of school.
Still there's not much I can do about for example homeless people?

Usually I just write along with the pictures, a little criticism towards this country and the official statements.

Meaning officially nobody here lives on the street, everybody has a some place to go, but I've seen enough of evidence in my explorations to know that the official statement couldn't be more wrong. Shanty towns in a middle of nowhere, beds made to a field that contains old bus stops and so on.
Shanty towns are a good example of what shouldn't be in this country, officially...

I guess I wont be winning any tourist promotion prize...

Still I don't know what should I do to all of this, but I do think about it and it certainly wont make me happy to find people living in forests etc.

I'd like to think the UE is a semi-secret society of sorts... Larry Niven once said that there is no cause so noble that it won't attract fuggheads. I think that UE is one of those activities that could do without "tourists", if you get my meaning. Not that we aren't tourists ourselves, but I think that we have the best intentions in our explorations. Start adding people who just want to do this because it's "cool" or "trendy" and well, the whole community suffers. These are the people that get hurt, or get caught, or destroy things and give everyone a black eye.

In alot of respects, I'd like to see UE stay a "secret society", or, not without a touch of drama, a "black art".

As for the homeless aspect, that hasn't been an issue in my area. The climate is too hostile for that and there is no infrastructure for temporary shelter here. But, my own take on it is this; you are kinda trudging through their "home"... be nice. Hell, they may cover for you or hit you up with some info. You never know.

I freakin' missed it! Tvguide.com changed their listing for Vh1 three times in the last hour, first it said some kind of Ozzy documentary would be on all night, then they said American Vampires would be on at 10 (but there was some tatooing thing on), then it said it wasn't on at all, but when I turned on the TV at 11:30 it was just ending! and VH1's own online schedule was worthless as well, apparently once it hits midnight in New York they consider the day over and won't show the previous day's schedule. I don't think TV executives are smart enough to figure out time zones.

So how long is this thing, only 30 minutes? Are there discrete segments on each part or just all mixed together (the ending looked pretty disorganized).

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Media exposure can do little for us, except possibly in the realm of helping the public understand the architectural treasures that are rotting away. But I would rather this remains a community of explorers who explore because its their nature, not because they saw how cool it was on TV.

UE is neither a secret sodiety, nor a democracy. It's just something people do. if it were a secret society, there would not be this web board. if it were a democracy, people would vote on any number of issues, and there would be rules and what not. While some morals, as to not defacing places, etc are useful, anything beyond that is not worth anyone's time and doesn't do much except for take the fun out of the game...
