First try at showing my photography.

Hello everyone,
For the longest time, i've been showing my photos from my explorations to my friends... And i thought it was about time i went on here and got some real advice from people who actually know what they're talking about.
Be as mean as possible, say what's on your mind, etc. It won't bother me, any little bit of info you can give will be appreciated and will help me work toward taking better photos.

The following photos were taken at various locations in my area with my Sony DSC-H1.

I like the pressure gauge, and the statue could have been cool if you had gotten more of the head in the photo. I'm struggling with the clear in front-out of focus behind look on several, and I think it spoils #11, although I'm not sure what to do about it.

Decent start, and I'm sure the pros here will have more constructive observations.

I am just giving you criticisms without much in the compliment department, afterall, that is what you asked for. Admittedly nothing I say is too detailed. That was because I wanted to comment on each one and have time constraints (also, I am a bit of a hack and can't give you much decent advise just my opinion.) I actually find the gallery set-up really frustrating to work with so I have rushed through this.

I will start off by saying that I think your pictures could use a bit of sharpening and more contrast. I find they tend to be too dark and dull.

1. There is nothing that really draws my attention in this one.

2. I think it would be better if it was sharper and had shadow detail.

3. Could be brighter and could use more contrast.

4. I think with this one I would prefer it with a bit more head. I also think you should crop out the light on the left.

5. Again, I think this picture could be brighter and have more contrast.

6. Again, could be brighter and have more contrast.

7. This picture is kinda boring to me, possibly because I am not into birds.

8. Could use a good sharpening.

9. I am not too fond of the angle of this shot. I think I would prefer it straighter.

10. Again, I think this one could use a straightening.

11. I think you should try to bring out some of the colour in the back wall on this one. There isn't enough contrast for the light switch to really pop out.

12. See above.

13. I would have preferred a close up so we might read some of the text.

14. I like this one, but think you have to clean up your shadow, or basically your whole right side. The right side is a right mess and really takes away from the picture. The left edge is also a bit screwed up, but it is not as painful to look at.

15. My standard issues apply, sharpen and contrast.

Thanks, man. I wasn't even trying to do anything cool with that one, but it came out to my liking.

Mind you, i don't do any photoshopping, cropping, or any sort of editing with my photos. The most i do is put my name on them and add a border...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what program(s) i could use, or different things i could do with different photos?

Thanks a lot, Argonian.
Like i said, i've never really done photoshop or anything like that in the past.
I'm considering starting to, as it would really turn my photos in a better direction.
I really appreciate your time.

Photoshop CS2 seems to be the big dog, although there are others.

I barely know how to use photoshop, but what little things I do know make a huge difference. I suggest you get some photo editing program. I think a few little tweaks would make a huge difference.

First of all, I'm not that great, but I will offer my 2 cents...

1. Not much as far as composition goes

2. I think a more detail in what you were shooting would have helped. Maybe blending that one with one exposing the thing (wrought iron I assume?) more. Photoshop CS2 has a great shadow/highlight tool that would help this too.

3. Quite underexposed. Definitely needs to be more contrasty.

4. I think this is a really cool idea. composition wise, it would have been cool if you got Mother Mary's chin in the picture.

5. Stepping to the right and turning towards the pole would have helped a bit I think. It looks like the light was behind your left shoulder, and it would have been exposed more.

6. Pretty cool, but could have been lightened up a bit.

7. Come on man, this is UE photography, not wildlife photography!

8. I like this, but I would have adjusted my white balance so it was warmer. (not sure if your camera has adjustable white balance, or if you can shoot in raw)

9. Ah the lonely chair/stool shot. I like it how it is.

10. A little crooked, and I would have cropped tighter on the top.

11. Confusing somewhat. I would have changed my angle so the other equipment was out of the background, or used narrower depth of field to blur it.

12. Okay, but I think less background blur would have helped.

13. Would have taken this one closer, and more in focus.

14. Kinda boring, but I see what you were going for. The casting on an object other than the wall would be cool, but I'm sure that what you took a picture of (the wall) is all that was available.

15. Something to look at through the window would have been nice.

With the exception of the ones that were lacking in composition, everything is fixable in photoshop. I don't think anybody that shoots digital will disagree that post processing is almost always necessary. Overall, very nice start. Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to seeing more.

Thanks a lot!!
CS2 is the name that i keep hearing, so i think i'll be going in that direction.
I do have a problem with shooting things that are otherwize boring subjects.
Either way, i'm going to get CS2, and tweak these photos some.
Once again, thank you for your time.

my first guess is you have a digital camera and don't use a tripod
your photos look more snapshotty than carefully considered
that said there are a few nice compositions and subjects in there
taking one's time with a shot forces you to look at the subject from several angles, vantage points and during different times of the day

explore your cameras functions more, does it do night photography/fireworks mode? maybe you can get weird effects with that..during the day
avoid using flash...love your tripod

try the gimp before shelling out for cs2
the gimp is free and has many of the functions cs2 does
plus the gimp is easily downloadable from the internet for free (legally)

Thanks a lot for the info. Most of my photos are 'snapshotty' as i normally drop by places on my way to work to just run through. I have no time to do anything these days. =(
I will try your suggestions, they seem interesting.
And the gimp, i'll look around for it. It seems cool, and it'll fit my wallet.
Thanks again, bro.

Let me preface this by saying I could take a lot of the criticism the guys have already given you in my own photography. I could also use a better camera and a tripod.

As for you, I think something you could benefit the most from is a look over the rule of thirds:

http://en.wikipedi...iki/Rule_of_thirds

I saw several photos where the subject was dead center. There is certainly the time and place for this, but I saw it enough to think you weren't doing it to break any rules you necessarily knew about (I could be wrong).

That's more of an overall suggestion. These guys have suggested you touch up your photos, which is technically kind of cheating. I think playing with your camera settings is something you try first. That way you won't get in the habit of "fixing it in post" as we say in the TV business... and we don't say it fondly. ;)

out there in the world right now, someone is exploring...

Yeah, i agree with you on 'fixing it in post'.
I was never a fan of it, but i've been considering it as of late.
As for making my subjects the center of the photo, i've been playing around with it lately, but it wasn't always what i did. I used to do a lot of odd-angled shots and such.
Thanks for the input.
