I actually had used to bring my scanner to school with me, and i found the security guards frequency. I was brought to the office and they tried to take my scanner away... but because the school policy did not state anything about scanners not being allowed, and because I was not listening during class, I threatened then under juristicion of the canadian radio communication act and I actually showed them a printed copy of said act.

they backed off after I threatened to take them to court, and actually signed a note I made them sign stating i was allowed to possess the scanner on my person for my remaining years in school.

idiots.

I believe the "Monitoring Times" website has a state by state listing of scanner laws, search around there or google "scanner laws".

Then start at http://www.radioreference.com/ and http://svartifoss2.../reports/index.cfm to find your local frequencies, and make sure you find out the mode, whether it be conventional, P25, trunked-EDACS or Motorola, etc. you could find this info on local scanning boards and prob. RR. This is crucial to selecting the proper equipment.

Next find a vendor, many are online. If I left anything out, I'm sure the other radio gurus could help out.

I actually got pulled over by the sheriff's department/Airport security where I live last weekend. I kept the scanner out of sight to avoid more hassle, but I listened to him log me as "suspicious activity". Since when is taking pics suspicious?
