I've been practicing my photography skills at the asylum right down the street from me. I would appreciate some critique on my latest roll.

I like em Levi.... looks good to me... the first one is a bit too grainy for me but that could be the wall .... kinda hard to tell.

you suck by the way... not everyone has the convenience of an asylum right down the street.... lol

I like them too. I also have an asylum down the street from me but it's not as cool. I'm debating posting pictures of it.

Your work seems to get better by leaps and bounds, killer stuff there.

4 & 7 seem a bit bland composition and subject wise, whereas your other ordinary subjects such as the socket and pipes look great in their positioning and colors.

I think all but 2 and 5 could use some darker shadows, pure blacks would make them pop a lot more.

I agree on Motts' point on the shadows... I also think that your balance is relying a lot on color-which is rich, but leaves parts of the frame empty.

Maybe try rearranging the stronger elements to help your harmony or discord; it's a little flat now.

1 - That fern makes this shot. Kind of bizarre. Nice.

2 - I like this a lot better than the average chair shot. You could use more shadow detail, but you're getting away with it because there's plenty to hold the picture together. I really like the blue of the chair.

3 - This is like a textbook lesson in composition. I'm not going out of my mind with excitement, but it's well executed. I like that little hint of pink peeking through...if there was a way to intensify that (never worked with color film) that would be cool.

4 - Good comp, good colors. You squeezed in the two elements of the picture successfully without making it feel cut off. The sinks look like they might be a little soft, but it's hard to tell.

5 - I think this picture could use a little more motion. What you did here is technically great, but for some reason this one just leaves me wanting a little more dynamic feel. The pattern of the green paint is great.

6 - This I like a lot. The colors are great. If you could lighten up the purple on the left side a little more the image would feel more balanced. I like that it's darker and the shadows feel deeper on the left, but just a liiiitle lighter to give it more balance.

7 - There's something odd about this. The look of it seems very strange for some reason. This shot is OK, but I think it needs more interest. I think a bit more context for the subject might have worked better. Not bad, but not great.

Good work!

I'm not so much good at the criticism but had to comment.

#2 made me look, then go back and look again which I've always thought was a sign of a truly excellent photo.

Nice work.

It's a tragedy.
It's exactly like a greek tragedy.

I didn't read anyone else's critique before I gave mine, but now that I read this I agree definitely. You're doing great to bring in some dynamic elements to your shots...diagonal lines or things that add tension like the wire in #2, but I think Glass is right that you're relying a lot on color to make the shots. I think your sense of composition and color is good, you just need to work on finding more dynamic subjects, or finding ways to put your subjects in a more dynamic context. I think these shots would be great in a series of different types of shots, but as a group they are all somewhat similar in how they "feel" to the viewer.
