| | stairs, boilers and me < on 5/9/2006 8:13 PM >
| | | hey all, i've made a few comments in this section but never put any of my own pics up, so i thought i'd put in a few from the weekend. stairs and boilers are my thing, and here is the both together in an estate house on an old military hospital site. i'm still practising, trying to produce pics half way between documentary and aesthetic, and all i usually do is alter the white balance on the camera that makes the blue ones. i'm sure i could do less drastic things instead though. also, the colours on these look like they're made up of lots of different bits of colour. not sure why it did that this time, it was a drizzly day and i had grub on the lens. might be that? anyway, improvement comments are welcome. they're taken on a canon ixus 40 (4 megapixels). 1.

| | | Love those railings the way they seem to undulate. Almost looks like an underwater refraction. The hand rail looks totally reptillian like croc skin. Awesome

| | | A little overload on the same theme and shapes... I think you could have narrowed the set down to two or three. I still like the color and form contrast of the first a lot, though. Cheese. Grass

Please, no, my english teacher heart can't take much more! The color blue's hues and brightness outlines the shapes of the handrails, increasing the contrast of the image because of it's near-monochromatic shadows and highlights. Also, on third look I see a lot of noise that could be dodged and burned out. Glass

this noise is the colours problem i mentioned at the beginning, and part why i put the pics in here. i couldn't figure out what caused it because it's in the original so isn't the compression, and it's in the ones without white balance alteration. if dust or damp on the lens can cause it then it's that. otherwise i don't know. so i just had a dodge and burn practice in photoshop and made what i would call a dodgy burnt smear on the picture. think i'd better practice a bit more before i ask any questions on that there technique... cheers! sam, maker of dodgy smears ps: i did an english degree, can i be allowed some grammar rebellion?
