| | | Here are some photos I took last year - you might recognize these places. I admit I'm a chicken. Since I usually travel alone, I tend not to take too many risks in scoping out buildings. I would love to have someone with me so I could be a little bolder with my explorations, but my husband just isn't interested. The first set are from an old motel - I LOVE old motor courts. I'm also a big neon junkie, and always stop to take photos of good signage. I tell you what, I get more stares from that than anything...

Here are photos from a ghost town in northern Texas. I've been inside the store but didn't have my camera with me. I'll be going back there, though, because it's one of my favorite places.
[gallery/] I hope you like the photos (and I hope I uploaded them alright!)

| | | cool! the second set is a location that's on my "to see" list. i'd love to see pics of the inside of the store when you head back. have you been in the school? the population was 50 in 1999 - is it pretty dispersed or is there any kind of a town center? any abandoned houses up there? just a few questions...

| | | Awesome, I really like the triangle Motel sign. The car and the trailer, easily look like a place that you might find me. N.

| | | Great pics, I am the same way. If I dont have Dad with me I dont feel comfortable venturing inside. However Friday I managed to gain access to the outside of a old HOtel Motel and the project manager was about to setup demolition. I removed a old neon arrow that was going to be thrown away, will have a pic hopefully tomorrow of it.

| | | I want your arrow!!! Seriously, I would be swimming in happy waters if I had some vintage signage in my house. Here's one of my best shots of (working) neon, from Broken Bow, OK:
I haven't been inside the school, mainly because I was too self conscious to go snooping. The road is fairly active, even if the town is dead. Lots of people going fishing and hunting along the river. But the store is readily accessible. And the drive going up there is so nice. When you go, make sure to stop at the old cemetery. There are many hand marked graves, if you're into that kind of thing. This ghost town was once a supply stop/saloon stop along the Chisholm Trail, which passed just west of it. I do a lot of exploring along the cattle trails - there are a number of ghost towns just waiting to be explored, many dating back to the cattle driving days. I wish gas would get cheaper so I can do some more running around.

| | | Spanish Fort has some history. There really was an 18th century fort built on the banks of the river near the 19th century town. It was excavated and some weapons and artifacts recovered. Some poor farmers field turned out to be the focal point of a treasure hunt. A contract was made to search for it and after digging up most of his land the treasure hunters just disappeared one night leading to speculation that they found something and ran out on their agreement.

| | | a friend of mine and his wife run - http://www.texasescapes.com/default.htm it's a good resource for starting points for exploring, and general texas travel and history. that's actually where i first heard of spanish fort. and when i go up there i will definitely look for the cemetery! i love cool old cemeteries, although my wife thinks i'm a bit ghoulish. i think she's just a chicken, it's not my fault that we usually end up at creepy old cemeteries just as it's getting dark... ;)

| | | Hey What! Guess what? I wrote the article on Spanish Fort for Texas Escapes! Seriously. I am a big admirer of John and Kate Troesser - they published my first article. http://www.texasescapes.com is a GREAT resource for scoping out places to explore. I spend hours on that site. I'm going to put up more information about ghost towns on my site soon. I found a really cool one in Oklahoma that looks like a time capsule.

Well if I find another one, you can make a trip to Dallas and pick it up. I am always looking for signs, mostly old rusted and shot up signs but that find was awesome. Once I get my workshop built I will send you some pics. |

| | | Here are photos from inside the ghost town buildings. Hope you like them! The store:
The store was once part of a line of stores that hugged Main street. A hotel, doctor's office, a cobbler (H.J. Justin, the bootmaker) and a few saloons made up Spanish Fort. The Chisholm Trail passed just west of the town. As the cattle were forded via Red River Station into the Red River, the cowboys would buy supplies at the store. Gamblers and other shady characters frequented Spanish Fort, which gave it a rather dubious reputation. The school:
The high school was built during the 1920s oil boom. Though it's not open anymore, it's still used as a community center whenever the community decides to get together. I think they put on a haunted house here once.

| | | just a few from that store in Spanish Fort. i learned that exploring with another person is great for exploring, but not as good for photographing unless they are shooting as well. i thought i got a lot more shots than i did. oh well, it was a great day anyway. i was amazed at how green it was up there. this almost made me reconsider. almost.
must have been a lot of barefooted horses around there.
i haven't seen a copier like this in a loooong time
and a few more from the store -
