Dungeons & Castles: Texas? Oklahoma? Arkansas?

Independent film maker & UER enthusiast seeks old stone structures. Can anyone hook me up with any OLD STONE cellars, sewers (ugh!), basements? Trying to find locations around North Texas (200 Mile radius) for a small (no budjet) independent film. Story takes place in a 12th Century French/or/Italian Castle.

Have had some success with older Texas "territorial" architecture basements. Don't want spanking new. Want "worn out" look; decrepit, dusty, antiquated, run down, 'weathered' locations. Built of hand laid stone/rock/block preferably.

Need locations that closely resemble ancient underground CATACOMBS, SECRET PASSAGEWAYS, DUNGEONS. And locations that mimic MEDIEVAL COURTYARDS, banquet rooms, libraries, kitchens.

Film story takes place in a 12th Century Monestary (franciscan order), so it deals with pretty spartan surroundings, not fancy like Louis XV or baroque. If you've ever seen "Name Of A Rose" with Sean Connery... you get the idea of what I'm looking for. Given the challenge, little may be found in one place (in Texas at least), but if I could find, say, a dozen different locations that were suitable - that would work.

I'm a new subscriber to UER and hope to make some photographic contributions during the next few months. I love old buildings and live in a 100 year old warehouse.

If anyone has any suggestions, post here and/or e-mail direct and I'll submit all photos/stories to this message board of our discoveries. Thanks! Gary Thomas, Denison, Texas.

eh, the only thing that would be old enough for your needs is nothing but barns and old ranch houses. brick, yes. stone, no.

Try San Antonio's Missions. I think that's what you're looking for.
Just clear it with San Antonio Film Commission.

There is a couple of "castle" type properties in the DFW area, not sure if they would provide the setting you need though as most are replicas. One old one that was built in the 30s I think it was could be a possibility. You would need to go out and talk with the guy who owns and is rebuilding it. He was very nice when I went by a year or so ago and let me take a good look around. he could be intrigued with it being in a movie but you'd probably have to pay him to use it but it would go to a good cause, helping to restore the place! It did have a basement but may not be big enough. Here is a pic.

As a side note to explorers, the guy rebuilding it, he could be done for all I know, as I said it's been over a year since I was there, lives in viewing distance, security watches it, and at one point he had cameras on site. He will not just ask you be prosecuted if you trespass but is connected enough with the city to demand it and to the max allowed! He is nice but only if you ask! If he isnt there leave him a note and explain what you want, I think he will call.

Another place to look is http://www.dupontc.../castles/index.htm

pretty cool site with alot of castle information!

Feel free to drop me a PM and I can give you directions if you cant find it.

DuncanTX:

Have located some large stone "castle-like" structures. This uer.ca is an excellent resource. Currently working weekends for a few months but hope to one day soon get involved with DFW uer outings, that your heading up. The cave pics were cool. And "abandoned metal junk in the woods" sounds interesting too.

Generally the Army Corps of Engineers owns the shoreline 50 yards of all it's project aquarian tracts (managed lakes, rivers, etc.) So if anyone lives above the cave and the cave is within 50 yards, then they have 'leased' the shoreline tract as part of their residence. But it's still a public easement. Property owners never seem to understand this. A Corps lease doesn't mean 'exclusive use'. Boat docks and commercial marinas fall under this same public easement clause. Ask any federal Park Ranger.

Again, my thanks for ya'lls suggestions.

Probing for more movie locations...

Isn't there like a huge turret in the side of a cliff overlooking Possum Kingdom Lake?

I know of a couple. One is in Turner Falls Park in Oklahoma, just across the border. The park would probably want money, but the structure itself is definitely cool, old tumbling down stones, moss, etc... It also has a 70 fool waterfall on the premises, looks just like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit photoshoot. Also, if I remeber correctly, there's one on a hill on the way to Lubbock. Can't remember the exact location, but the last time I was out there, it was someone's house.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. There is one of those types of drains in Austin as well. 12 Ft
Don't know about it looking like a castle or whatever but parts of it look pretty old.

there is a castle like structure.. probably a house... and most likely lived in, off of FM 205, on the right side of the road. you'll see it after about 10-15 mins off in the distance.

I know of a few more drains like that here in Fort Worth with stone masonry, I dunno how old they are though.

melancholy:

still looking for ancient urban stormdrains.. can you nail down exact locations of fort worth storm drains? the '1901' drain is excellent and I wrote 2x to ask it's exact whereabouts..

any and all old looking (roman empire) catacomb type structures are wanted for film and video work..

later
