am I improving?

I tried to think more about which shots I like and why when I was taking them and when I was editing them. I think they're getting better but it could just be because this was such a wicked location, how could you NOT get awesome shots?

You be the judge.

I like them. I think they're pretty good. Did you climb on the roof of the block house?

heh... I'm not agile enough to climb on a block... let alone a block house. but I would have... had it stood but a little closer to the ground.

I probably wouldn't have been able to either.

I really can't critique them as I have said before, but I really think there is some potential for you. Yes, they are improving, there is a couple that I really have enjoyed looking at in this set, keep up the good work. N.

the cropping on 1 & 2 are really bad.

the compositions / subject matter is just sort of "so what" in a bunch of them and are overexposed a ton in a few areas.

just sayin!

Looking back now I agree on 1 but I still like 2.

Can you be a little more specific? are there any that you do like?

I apprecate the criticism. I'm looking for more specifics so I can figure out how to improve.

1 - Flash. Flash isn't good.

2 - This is the best of the bunch....almost to the point where it's TOO much better than the others to fit in. I agree with Rob that the cropping could have been better, but I also wouldn't call it bad.

3 - I like this, you did a good job composing it, but there's not enough to look at. You lined everything up very well, but you needed a stronger subject.

5 - The post on the left is somewhat distracting. I would have tried to move right further and get rid of the post.

6 - Blah. This photograph has potential but needs more context to be interesting.

7 - Again here I see the glimmer of potential. You are thinking about your composition and you are succeeding, but again there is no strong subject. This has a lot of shit going on in it, but nothing that interesting.

Keep working. Notice that the one that stands out above all else has a very strong subject, is simple, has a simple color pallette, etc. Your composition is definitely showing signs of work, but you need to focus on stronger more interesting subjects. If you just want to focus on light or color, you need to REALLY emphasize those so they don't get lost in a sea of stuff that's not necessarily that interesting.

I thought they were boring and overdone, with the exception of #2.
And if you're like me, a great location will make you a better photographer--not because you "can't take a bad photo" in said location, but because you're interested and excited about your frame.
If I could recommend anything to you, it's to get different angles... most of your shots are wide from a 40 degree angle on the subject and I think you can do more creative things with that.
I also noticed you've been experimenting more with foreground frame objects: keep that up, it's one of the most interesting composition tricks out there.

ok. things I'm getting out of this. Use better angles, don't be afraid to get close and try from an unusual side. Get closer and stop taking distance snap shots. if I want an establishing shot though, how do I do about that?

I like shots like #2 a lot. I take a bunch of them but I don't put them up as much because they don't always turn out well.

THings I know I need at this point:

My OWN digital camera, one that I know how to use all the features of, instead of my mothers which I'm terrified of hurting and don't quite understand.

A Tripod and a better flashlight to stay in my car and be taken with me when I'm exploring.

Do I have this right? are there any other suggestions?

i agree with the angles.... use your wide angle for what its for....

i have a similar shot to #1

use that is a primer

my best idea for getting good angles is to find a place where you dont think anyone has ever stood before... and stand there and take the picture of your subject..... it works like a charm

Good luck
