thanks... i appreciate it.. I always relied on my digital rebel wich i like to think i took decent pictures with but lately i just feel like theres so much im missing out on as far as film goes has such a better tolerance for light and shadow i think im going to be making a switch BACKwards to film rather then the recent trend of switching to digital something about the colors just grabs me more and i would love to learn as much about it as possible

if you want to go even further "backwards" but improve even more
I recommend medium format....its just an amazing format to shoot with
and with every negative being so expensive you make each shot count
my work improved so much

your colours are very nice
and there is something off-kilter about your compositions that seems very purposeful
I like

Great stuff, the switch to film will do you wonders in the long run!

I know you hang with justin - so anything you need to know about medium format just ask him, but again - a job well done.

i personally love film and always will. lately i've been playing around with a lomo. u might want to check out www.lomography.com , maybe pick up a medium format lomo, or look on ebay for an old roloflex. old twin lense reflex cameras shooting 120 film have such a smooth older look to them. i feel it really brings out the scene in these old buildings. i'm still shooting digital now with my EOS20D for the most part. i broke my lense on my 35mm EOS Elan. oops, so now its just my lomo super and an old yashica electro occassionally. either way, have fun with it. that's the main part. if you get more into film, i do suggest ilford 400 black & white film... its my personal fav. the triax isnt bad , but offers a bit more grain ( my buddy handskills likes the triax) i seriously need to shoot some more film too. maybe this weekend if i can borrow a short lense for the elan ?

anyways, good luck and remember to have fun !!

cheers !

YES!!! Ilford Delta is the way to go.... i shoot all my portraits and headshots with ISO 100. Great stuff... i was in a small town and saw a camera store and stopped in and we got on the subject of BW film and i mentioned i shoot TRIX and he wouldnt shut up about how much it sucked.. and i got a little angry and was about to leave... then he walked behind the counter and threw 2 rolls of Ilford Delta at me and i was like... whats this..... and he said EXCELLENT FILM.. use it and come back and get the prints done and if you dont like it... the processing is free. I went back and i ended up paying him because i was very impressed iwtht he contrast and pretty much everything.... ive been using ID 100 religiously since

why kind of film did you use?

i started off with film, but fucking HATE the darkroom. shit always goes wrong. sure i like the quality. but its just a royal pain in my rear end. although my film camera is broken at the moment.

anyways illford SUCKS. soooooooooooooooooo grainy. IMO

i really enjoy Fuji. i like their film. theres tons of film thats amazing..i'll have to make a list. cause once i get a working SLR i wanna try stuff.

you should try infrad..but that stuff is really tricky!

lol i used some bullshit cvs film i was on my way there with no camera and no intention of shooting just hanging out walking around and one of my friends had their 35 mm with them so i was like fuck it went to the nearest cvs and stole some film my options were limited seeing as how i had to find a 24 hour store and the easiest item to steal cause im broke and have no money lol

check out www.photo.net for interesting discussions on a variety of equipment, formats, and film types
since you say you have little money I'll recommend the seagull, the mamiya c220 or c330, or for less physical clunkiness and a bit more compactness try anything from the bronica line
in some you can get a light meter built in
which is for me more convenient
in the case of a seagull and mamiya you need to buy a separate one or meter from another camera
bronica is called the poor mans hasselblad and though it certainly does the job you can "feel" the difference in build quality and the experience of shooting with a hasselblad is much nicer
I came by mine through my great-uncle who was a photographer in norway
shooting pics with cameras made closer to the time when these places were active relly adds to the experience
nothing worse than having a 35mm slr do automatic rewind when the silence is so papable you could hear a pin drop

large digital slrs can take up as much physical space as a tlr
I find all the bells and whistles on the newer cameras (ie.1980 and on) a bit confusing
a light meter, manual control and flash synch is all I want and need
in terms of 35mm try a simple nikkormat (to me the holy grail of simplicity and build quality in a 35mm camera..the ergonomics are great too)
or a canon ae-1, or olympus om-10
all these cameras i have, which is why I feel I can recommend them
some can be had more cheaply than others but they all perform well
I have never used a rangefinder whether 35mm or medium format so anyone out there with experience there could chime in

ilford is a wonderful film to use
I use iso 50 and 100 and roll my own on a bulk loader
I highly recommend doing this to save money
also getting a developing tank to develop your negatives can save you alot of money

I fucking LOVE the darkroom
but finding a space and having it all set up can be a challenge
all my equipment is currently packed away for lack of space at my current apt.
developing a pic on fiber not resin coated paper is a religious experience
cross processing slide film, messing with filters, doing time exposures and messing with the rules are all good thigs, enjoy
