|  | | | In an effort to make a more reliable system, I've upgraded UER to store each users' locations in terms of Latitude and Longitude.
Once more people have specified this information in their profile, the Events system will be upgraded to make use of it. Here is a comparison of the two systems (old and new):
Old System
Event notifications would be sent based on your "Province". So, if you live in Niagara Falls, Canada, you'd get notifications for events happening in Ottawa (6 hour drive away) but not events in Buffalo (30 minutes away).
New System
Event notifications will be based on geographical proximity. So, you will be notified of all events within 10, 20, 50, 100 km (you can choose). This makes much more sense.
A new feature will be added: "People near me". You'll be able to see which UER members are near you. Obviously, in the interests of privacy, there will be some position ambiguity added so that we aren't giving away exactly where everyone lives, but it will be accurate to the city.
So, do your part! Fill out the new fields in your profile today!
