About 175 miles west of DFW are some old Titan II missile silos. Has anyone been out there to check them out? I'd sure be interested in going.

Well, thanks for the link anyways. I had most of those points mapped in TX and OK but missed a few and still needed the rest of them in other states. They are missing a whole bunch of minuteman sites though I think.

My European history teacher was telling me about an abandoned missile silo he stumbled across in rural Kansas. It might be one listed, I don't know the details. He said that there really wasn't anything to do because the whole thing filled up with ground water and it was really dark in the accessible places anyway. I'm assuming all of these places (underground ones anyway) would all be filled up with water by now.

what they were supposed to do were blow up the blast doors and entry structure and fill escape with concrete. I say supposed to because this diddnt always happen. But most all are pretty messed up.

Hi all - I'm new to the site, and thought this might be a good introduction.

I'm not sure what sort of silos they are, but there are a handful of sites (I only know of one's approx location) south and west of Abilene. The site I know of is southwest of a little town called Buffalo Gap, and IIRC, is found by following the farm road that leads out SW of Lake Abilene.

The property is now owned by the AISD (Abilene Indep School Dist.) and they use it as some sort of work/storage site - the grounds, I'm not sure about the silo. One of my uncles worked for AISD and knows the location/lowdown, I'll try to get more info when I see him.

There are one or two other sites west of Merkel, somewhere between Merkel and Sweetwater. I'm not sure of their location(s), but I could probably find out by contacting people from high school - the location(s) were pretty common knowledge. As for these sites, I had friends who had explored them; as mentioned above, you could go down about 5-7 stories and then they were filled with water. This was all in the late '80s - no telling what condition they're in now.

I just checked Google Earth and all of those areas are high-res. If I can get more info on where they are, I'll post up more info on their whereabouts on google earth and post them up.

They're out there…

Apparently there's more info than what I thought out there about these silos:

http://www.roadsid....php3?tip_State=TX

http://www.roadsid.../TXOPLmissile.html

http://www.dtmag.c...MissileSiloTX.html

http://www.texnews...azos/bill0622.html --Abilene is home to the "ICBM Historical Society" - WTF?

I'll be heading down to ABI for part of the Thanksgiving weekend - I'll do what I can while there and report back - if anyone is even interested.

Anyone?

Anyone?

Not my idea of exploring either.

Through the different links, however, I did glean that there are a good number of sites out there, they should be easy enough to find, and not all of them are being cleaned up, used for scuba diving or housing.

Spoke to a buddy from High School last night and he mentioned yet another silo location that I didn't know about near Abilene. Seems there might be one North of ABI near Ft. Phantom.

I'll know more after this weekend. It's hard to talk to everyone I can talk to while here in FW.

Good Lord - I should have been able to trip over a damn missile site of some sort at some time, one would think.

So is that site near Ft. P Hill or Ft. P Lake? Judging by the terrain I'd say lake?
