first photos ever

my boyfriend just bought me a digital camera in place of our old 3mpx which we pretty much had just to document where we've been. i'm not a photographer at all and i've never owned anything but a disposable camera. this is the first camera i've ever used like this (it's an olympus sp-500 uz / 6mpx, 10x zoom) and i still have a LOT to learn... tear 'em apart and give me some pointers please.

these are photos of the upstairs of the mill building that i work in--only a few of about 60 shots.

I'm not a professional, but I think you're off to a good start. I think you have an eye for interesting composition. I'll let the pros tell ya what to do better, but I think they're pretty good. Hope to see more soon.

The last one is strongest. All of the ones of the windows are blown out. Bracket, bracket, bracket. I hope you use a tripod?
Otherwise, just keep it up. As stated above, you do have an eye for composition.

composition is okay across the board; but as noticed, they're all overexposed.

does the camera have a live histogram?

try exposing to make sure that you don't lose details to pure white (the right side of the histogram)

http://www.luminou...expose-right.shtml

following the expose-to-the-right theory will result in some over exposed images that can be FIXED; however, if you expose so far to the right that the highlights are blown out (a histogram with a big spike at the far right), you've lost data and need to re-expose.

keep trying, keep learning, you've already got a good start!

for some reason i've always loved the high contrast too much light look but i'll definitely investigate the histogram--i'm sure it has one, there's tons of crap on that camera i don't understand. i have a friend who's a photographer, i'll have her help me out thank you!

to me these are all good
and I like them as they are
if these are the start of your photography explorations I think you could be really amazing one day
keep asking questions, push your work and don't get comfortable with one style, subject matter or type of shooting

Get about 6 feet of ball and chain from a hardware store, the same stuff that most bathroom sink plugs are held on with, and a short bolt that fits the tripod hole on the camera. When you need to be steady, screw it into the camera and stand on the other end with your foot, pull it tight and away you go.

Takes up the size of maybe a Bic Lighter, and costs less than one.

Small enough?
