| | | Ohhhh...you have a rebel...check this out then... http://www.luminou...expose-right.shtml Basically what this says is that the sensor captures more color data in the brightest part of the histogram. What that means is that, if you don't have enough dynamic range to fill the entire histogram on your camera, you want to expose so that the data is on the right side of the histo. This means that you will capture the most possible color information. What you do is shoot in RAW and OVER expose your shots. Then, when you convert from RAW, you can crank down the exposure to whatever level you want it. You can let areas black out if you want, or you can maintain shadow detail. Exposing to the right + shooting in RAW gives you the control to make it look however you want and get the most possible color information captured. That's FYI...pictures are still great...but I think you mentioned something about undexrposing them a bit which is the opposite of what you want to be doing. You want the brightest exposure possible that doesn't blow the highlights...then you can crank it down in post. [last edit 4/27/2006 8:08 PM by desmet - edited 1 times]

Just looking around...
| | | Re: Gathering Storm <Reply # 26 on 4/27/2006 10:37 PM >
| | | Yeah it's pretty overwhelming. Every time I think I know my camera (I also have a Rebel XT) these kick-ass photographers come along and explain something you never even thought of considering. It's a good thing though- free advice from great photographers is always appreciated. By the way, very nice shots. I want to get there myself, but I hear not great things about the strict security there and I'm not sure if it's worth a 5 hour ride. Thanks for sharing.!

Haha, no problem. It's overwhelming as fuck when you're trying to get a handle on it but soon enough it becomes second nature. Not that I'm some kind of expert...only been shooting digital for a year...but it seems like a lot more than it is at first. I remember when I saw that the first time I was just like "Christ, how am I ever going to remember all this crap" but as you get used to it it gets way easier. DEFINITELY start shooting RAW though. Raw is the only way to go. You'll need a RAW converter, which could be a good or bad thing. If you don't want to do TOO much processing to your photos, you can get by with just the sharpening/color/saturation/white balance controls in the RAW converter and avoid photoshop altogether. If you really want to work it, you convert then work in photoshop. For a RAW converter I recommend Capture One Pro. There are cracks for it out there...
