i really like the lighting on this picture but to me the handle really doesn't seem focused is just me or its it really not focused?

Do you have AF lock? Look it up in the manual. Just point at the spot you want focused, lock it in, reframe and shoot. Some cameras will let lock focus by pressing the trigger in half way and keeping it there till you reframe.

The sharpening article covers a variety of techniques but the USM section is the most useful tutorial I've seen. Basically, you set the percentage to 3 or 400, then set the radius based on how the edges look...crank it up until you're starting to see white halos. Then, bring the percentage down to where it looks good. Then, set the threshold to prevent it from sharpening the noise. The technique has worked pretty well for me.
