| | | Free online maps of Canada? < on 10/21/2003 8:40 AM >
| | | I'm wondering if there's a Canadian equivalent of Topozone for getting free maps online, specifically I'm trying to find maps of some WWII bunkers that I think are around Prince Rupert, but I'd like to have a topo map resource for the rest of Canada as well. I think I've seen something like this mentioned, but a search returned nothing useful.

| | | I thought parks and recreation handed out maps if you asked.... not sure about topographic ones though.

| | | I could probably find some in the university library, although an online map service world be more convinient. Canada doesnt have a topozone/terraserver equivalent?

| | | If you go to your Provincial Archive building they have both sets of topographical survey maps from the 1940's and from the 1980's. Like mentioned above, you could also try your university's geography department.

| | | The lack of free online topographic maps of Canada seems to be related to the particulars of copyright law there; I found this message that explains the situation. http://jidanni.org/geo/map_freedom/canada.txt Some maps are available on CD rom or DVD, but they're not cheap. http://www.fedpubs.com/mpchrt/maps/topocd.htm The only online map source I've found and used so far that covers Canada is mapblast.com, but that just covers roads, railroads and other basic features.

| | | another thing you may want to get your paws on and learn how to interpret is aerial photographs. they can show you things that you wouldn't see on a topo map and really gives you real time photos. they can show you everything on a very small scale (up to 1:100 from what i've seen) and have been updated recently (circa at least 1970 in Canada.. i know of Ontario for sure) and (hypothetically) are updated every 10-20 years. they're a little more expensive than a topo map but more than well worth it, especially if you know what you're looking for. .matticus

| | | oh, right. and you can get these from your local governments provincial/state office. In ontario, I would contact the Ministry of Natural Resources. so find your equivalent, and they will put you on the right path. .matticus

| | | The military topographical maps are issued in 1:25 000 and 1:50 000, and were created for all of canada, with nifty little dots to show where buildings are in non-urban areas... Now I just have to remember where to get them...
I wonder whats behind THAT door? |
