Telephone company equipment.

A long time ago I found a magazine that sold all sorts of telephone equipment. (obviously meant for telephone companies and not average buyers). Inside was line equipment, climbing equipment, hardhats, uniforms, whatever. An entire catalog of equipment for phone companies to order out of. Does anyone know of anything else like this? I can't really find much online, and I can't remember the name of the magazine.

I guess someone could always break into a telco van, but that idea just isn't very appealing to me. Having legit uniforms/hardhats and equipment would make you look much less suspicious when doing something, especially out in the open. Also, you could probably even claim to be from the telephone company and say you're here to work on a trouble ticket, and given access to lots of low security buildings.

Anyways, it couldn't hurt. Anyone know of any good vendors/catalogs for real professional equipment?

That decoy would work great if you didn't have to walk back to your '91 Cavalier.

You still need a Ford Econoline with a ladder rack on the top and some pylons. ;)

One other little problem if you do get all the equipment, the van, etc. Most telephone employees don't shoot pics on the job. Home invaders sometimes use the same MO, you might get more than you bargained for.

Oh trust me I didn't forget the van. Buy an old white van and paint a bigass telco symbol on it. Actually I was considering a used ambulance. Why on earth a used ambulance? Well you can actually sometimes get them for $3-5k and they usually still have the power supplies in the back.

This would be simply for messing with things you probably shouldn't in the day, i.e. climbing telephone polls, getting access to the utility rooms where the phone lines are. I'm a bit of a telephone company enthusiast as well, have been for years. I've managed to do a little bit like this, once when my friend was fired from walmart, he gave me his uniform and I went around pretending like I worked there. Went in the back, scoped out the security room, etc... it works great when there's lots of employees who can't possibly know everyone at the store.

Just google "lineman's supplies", gear, supply, equipment, or variations on that.

If you google "haligan", you find tons of supply shops online for SWAT and Fire Rescue. Find the name of something a lineman uses, google that, and you'll find shops that sell the gear. There's more than one way to use a search engine.

There's a catalog I've used called Jensen tools, which I guess is now owned by Stanley [didn't get that memo]. They carry most of the technical tools used by telephone and cable companies. If you want safety equipment like hardhats and stuff Grainger or Lab Safety Supply are great companies to get anything you need, from legi confined space gear, fall arrest, gloves, safety shoes, vests, hardhats, down to security uniforms.

Most telephone company vans I've seen lately are new, clean and have the current LOC logo painted/decal on them. New Econolines arent as cheap as you would they they'd be.

as far as the car goes, it doesn't need to be a utility van. As long as it has the logo on the side, noone will questions a white for taurus or a minivan. As long as it's whit it wouldn't be conspicuous. Now a bright orange rice burner with a QWest logo on the side probably wouldn't work. I was actually considering getting a magnetic QWest decal printed for my white minivan.

I always look around when I see construction sites and whatnot - sometimes the telephone company will hire contractors and give them magnetic logos for their vehicles. I haven't found one yet that I could get at without being spotted but I'm still lookin...

Ever consider getting the blank magnetic sheet and painting/cutting your own logo? It's alot easier to take some pictures of a logo and make one than wait around for weeks or months hoping to get close enough to take one from the company.

Of course, with your own supply of magnetic sheet, you could make temporary logos for alot more companies. Anyone know where they sell this?

Good idea ... It's not like I make it my full time job to look for magnets to steal - it's just something that's on the side of my mind, so to speak, and if I happen to see one I'll go for it. You do bring up a good point, that I'm going to get some pics of logos / find high-res versions online.

Home Depot.

Seriously, just get a decent tool pouch with a bunch of cutters, screwdrivers, etc... you can even pick up a decent test set there. Most people won't know enough to tell whether all the tools are Bell-issue or not. They just see "hard hat, tool belt, must be doing his job."

If you want to find some of the more obscure stuff, Stanley Supply Services (http://www.stanleysupplyservices.com/) (formerly Jensen Tools) is a decent source. You can also look in the Yellow pages for telecom/datacom/electrical distributors.

Maybe it's just me, but if you go to such lengths to "blend-in" if your caught no one will believe your story of just exploring. You'll get the book throw at you; why would someone invest so heavily in a rouse that wasn't for revenge or profit? A hard hat, and vest is one thing, impersonating utility company people is way out in left field. It's asking for it.

What would you be doing with the telco equipment? If your think of wiretapping, it is a severe federal offence..
BTW, what is the name of the old magazine you found?

MSC is another good one for industrial supplies...if they don't sell it, they sell the machinery to make it yourself!

I work in a warehouse with that kinda stuff in it, they are usually pretty tight with that kind of stuff, at least the stuff with logos on it, i think all it would take is a bright orange vest a hardhat and a toolbelt and no one would harass ya
