| | | Its sad really, how much crap is left over, there are places people cannot walk because they've planted mines and forgotten exactly where they were! And I think in some countries kids walking to school probably get blown up randomly. Imagine fearing every step you take would be your last :o Ah silly silly war

| | | On second thought I am going to give a response along the same lines as the response I gave in the Flamethrower thread: If you are stupid enough to post here saying that you are going to play with live explosives then please don't let me stop you. Toss around a few unstable shells and remove yourself from the gene pool.

| | | Posted by Duncantx Ive found the site of an old army munitions plant from WWII, but the actual structure is long gone, but i know that lots of people have found live ammo and grenades in their yards, so im gonna see if i can find anything in the woods.

don't listen to those sissies who say not to mess with old explosives. you don't have a single hair on your nut sack if you are afraid to whack an old grenade with a sixteen ounce claw hammer. "real explorers" do it all the time, unless you're just not hardcore enough. more wisdom from the mechfreak. i'm so glad that you're back, and i sincerely mean that. P.S.- to the rest of the world...despite most outward appearances, Texas people really aren't that dumb. the dumb one are just louder than the rest. please don't lump us all together. oh hell, i'm an okie anyway, but the vast majority of Texans i know are warm, thoughtful people who use polysyballic words, flush toilets, and dental floss. really.

| | | I always hear stories on the news every month or so about uxo being found by idiots. I remember a story involving an live munitions shell being hammered at a scrap metal factory, it ended up killing about 8 or so people. So many people don't see the destructive power behind explosives.

| | | destructive force of powder in equation form: If it can throw a 50kilo shell 2 kilometers straight up, e=m*g*h=50*2000*9.81 = 980 Kilojoules. Enough energy to boil ~250liters of water. You have less than that in your body. 50x less (5 quarts (4.7 liters)). This is your fun fact for the day, brought to you by the number I. As in, "I just vaporized all the blood in my body". But if its a stable, undecomposing composition, its tons of fun. Unless you try to drill it out.

| | | i do army cadets, and i have personally walked into a valley in singelton army range, and seeing 6 or 7 mortars lying on the ground, miss-fired. we left immediately, and it good we did becoz as we where leaving, one went off. That was a big bang, im glad i was not in. trust me these things, go off without being touched. even the slightest temperature variation can set one off. another cadet story, is that a stupid kid (who wasnt under my command thank god) picked up what he though was a smoke grenade off the ground at the singeleton army range, and stuffed into his sleeping bag, it was fine for 3 days of camp and on the 4th it went off, spilling tear gas throughout the platoon when they where formed up, in front of mp's. not good. these things are actually illegal for a reason believe it or not.

| | | Wow, I have a story to tell you all about munitions: Wayback in July/August of 05' I was on my basic military courses in petawawa. so we were digging our trenches for our course end exercise. The fuck-up of the course finds some UXO (un exploded ordinance) and guess what he does? he kicks it and gets almost total body burns because it was an incendiary round from an old arti gun. Moral of the story don't touch it; report it.

| | | good god you are a fool. and if you go exploring ex-munitions factories you will be a dead fool. I was in the military and we used to get calls all the time about people checking out the old factories and being hurt/maimed/killed. there are few places I won't UE and munitions factories are one of them, just leave it alone.

| | | You ARE being foolish. Remember one thing above all else: weapons are made to KILL people. KILL! They're not made so you can scrounge around for a old hand grenade in woods that could be full of shells and bullets and blow yourself up when you find out that the fuse has degraded and it goes off as soon as you pull the pin and release the saftey lever. I'm not even going to try to describe how much danger you put yourself in when you go looking for old explosive shells in woods. So many people have been killed in France/Belgium since the Great War just because they accidentally found a dud shell - and THEY tried to leave them alone. Don't kill yourself.

| | | I have a question for you munitions experts. How do you know if it's live? Or if you see any ordnance, should you just assume it is? The only thing I've ever seen is shotgun shells and it's pretty obvious if they're spent or not.

post-cleanup munitions factories are one thing. test fields that might have misfires or UXO, or waste-pit areas are something entirely different. most abandoned / reused (wildlife refuge?!) american WWII era ordnance plants have the areas with UXO very clearly marked.

| | | I dunno.. if I ran across a field that was littered with artillery shells and old landmines and random crap I am gunna just assume it's all live and pissy and just walk away.. it's a safe bet that way.. I'm not an expert with demolitions and I don't want to try to learn on my own in a field of potentially temperamental explosives..

| | | this has to be one of the most fun forums ever... stupidity amazes me, but i guess if yer so inclined with such a death wish, then so be it. my suggestion is learn to shoot, well i might add. buy a good rifle and stand a good half mile away, and use your scope, adjust for windage and elevation accordingly, and shoot the old ammo till it's dead and destroyed ! what fun ! new live ammo, killing old unstable ammo ... see all the ammo u get to play with ? twice the bang for the buck !
cheers ! " Take only pictures, leave only footprints" |
