Yeah, there is a large quarry around here owned by Vulan Materials Corporation. Which manufactures plastic so I have no idea why they need a quarry. But that's beside the point. Are there any special risks or dangers associated with open pit quarries?

Here's a photo:

I'm just looking for specialized information in general. (<---Oxymoron alert) Thanks in advance.

Biggest risk I can think of is if it is still active - since you don't work there you wouldn't know when/what/where they are blasting. That could be a messy end.

Rock-slides are also a concern too.

Quarries are generally pretty safe but not too interesting. If it's an active quarry there's very likely to be a guard sitting in a truck somewhere to guard the equipment and the explosives so it's probably not worth the trip. If you do go scout it by vehicle on a Sunday, if nobody chases you out then you're probably ok.

I used to drive fast all over the gravel quarry roads in high school and regularly was chased by guards in white pickups. High speed gravel drifts in an '84 Town Car are truly magic.

Drowning. Of coarse that's only if try swim there and don't check the water depth before you dive, or get too drunk etc. Beware of blasting caps, etc. Doubt if you'll find any if it's not active. If it is active look out they may have security K-9s for that reason. Kids like to steal them, the explosives that is.

Yeah we've been there before but never got past the perimeter fence because we were too interested with the dirt moving equipment (I sat in a caterpillar backhoe for warmth). The internal place looks really interesting and it did have some white pickup trucks. Should I be worried?

It was snowing and the pickups had the distinct arcs of wind shield wipers. Also, space heater was on. Perhaps we should have been more cautious. I thought I saw a powder magazine but it was outside the fence so theres no way it was one.

Whats a det cap look like?

They use electric caps almost always; small metal cylinder about 2.5 inches long. With two wires in electric ones, fuzed ones may or may not have a fuze crimped on. There are many varieties, many are brightly colored. There is also line detonation cord, it looks like thick insulated wire or solid plastic flexible rod...it's not!

All of these are high explosives and if you find them, don't touch them. Leave. You can lose a hand, eye, or more. Time and exposure to heat can make them more shock sensitive (they already are to begin with). Some are sensitive to static electricity.

If these are present and they likey are if it's an active site best to stay clear. It's more trouble than it's worth.

Do you think the insides of those buildings are interesting? Chances of them being incredibly alarmed?

I think people should have a rough idea what they look like, and know how dangerous they can be, but that's it. You may come across them occasionally and in places that would surprise you. Like along side a major highway exit ramp. The detonators are much more unstable than most high explosives. They should not be touched. These aren't big m80's and will give someone who doesn't understand them a rude awakening. Even experts are injured by these.

There a few other posts and guilds that should probably be deleted as well. It attracts attention that most explorers don't merritt, want,or deserve. If you play with HEs your going to get hammered one way or another. If you find one of these devices leave it alone, call 911 and report the location. Avoid sites that may contain them , and do not post info about the site. That's what I would do.

I'm sure that the building with the blasting equipment will be alarmed. IF the quarry uses blasting, if you live nearby you should know, or just go in there and ask when the next blasting event will be, so you can tell your mom so she won't freak out next time..... If theres no blasting, the chances of them keeping that equipment on hand, or not locked deep in a closet somewhere is very slim (liability and such).

Assuming it's an active site you shouldn't be able to set off explosions unless you're trying to (ie: hammer a detonator into a block of HE with a rock).

And blackhawk - We are all adults here, if he desires to get himself blown up that is his own prerogative, people will do stupid things wether or not you tell them how or where. Goes for elevators too.

Sooooo, look out for explosions, loose rocks, security, and no diving. Wear boots too, 'cause, um, it sounds like a good idea.

Each site has it's own protocols. You ever work at one(1)?

False. A blasting cap is a high explosive, and more unstable and shock sensitive than a boaster/main charge. Blasting caps are shock sensitive, and very dangerous..

No we are not all adults here, some are younger in chronological age, and some just have a lot to learn. In most states your not considered an adult till your twenty-one. People should have an idea what is dangerous, and why. I think I have been fairly accurate in giving a basic understanding of the danger of blasting caps. No one should ever attempt to handle them unless you have been trained how to.

If you want to play in the hurt locker by all means knock yourself out, but go there alone.

Hey, I made a journal entry about the quarry because I never did do it and for you guys to get a better idea of the place.

Check it out on my journal.

Thanks Blackhawk. I'm an adult in mind but not in body sadly. I know not to even go near blasting caps. I'd never even THINK about taking or even touching one for that matter. I'll keep a sharp eye out.

Read my post and could someone tell me what that sulfur smell was?

Point taken, very cool location indeed. I guess growing up in the limestone capital of the world has ruined me on them. Most of the ones around here are just jumbles of semi-portable conveyors, shoots, and crushers with the most interesting things being the abandoned trucks and dozers.
