Stratification

Cold-Cold Power

Cinder Block Memory

Stratification
was taken in an half-abandoned powerplant complex in northern MN with my 18-24 zoom.
Cold-Cold Power is a different powerplant in central MN. That shot is with my 50mm prime.
Cinder Block Memory is a 1887 car shop in central MN that's been bricked up and boarded and sold as a warehouse... I used my wide zoom for that shot too.

All photos here were taken with my Canon EOS 300D.
As comments come up I'll expand on the photos--there's a method and story behind each of them.

If you want to see more of my work, I host my photos through DeviantART @ http://www.mynameisglass.deviantart.com so you might want to check it out.

PS.
These are all from the last two weeks.
If you want to see more (and frankly, better) work you can go to the above URL.

Picture # 1: Looks great but it looks a little uneven, might want to straighten that out.

Picture # 2: Awesome, I love powerplants, so I favor that one cause it's saweet. Did you go inside and if so any thing cool?

Picture # 3: Looks really cool I think the tilt goes good on this one, got to love the undisturbed snow.

#1 is precisely the shot I was going for when I was photographing a similar stairset, but I failed. Great work, man!

#2 is remarkably warm. A good feeling comes over me when I view it.

#3 is my least favorite, although it still does the job of making me want to explore the other side of the door...

I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop.

wonderful work
I love the second with the stiff white chunks of white cutting through the composition
the third i feel like you could do without the snow and take the pic more headon, but perhaps you explored that composition too
I find vantage point really changes the mood and you got some great shots here
with the third vantage point to the side and low down: gives it a sort of informal on edge look (rather than a more formal head on shot)
any way of jacking up the detail in the top left corner?
love the blues and oranges in the first one with all other colours muted, very cool

I'll check out your website for more shots

1) I meant it to be crooked--the whole staircase is tilting a bit in real life so I thought I'd accentuate it. I have a B&W version where it's straight but it's just not the name.
2) I've been in twice: once at night and once in the day... it's one of the most untouched locations I've been in for size: there's only two tags in the place! There are four furnaces still with minimal damage and one 1850 Worthington steam pump. I took a neat panorama in there that can be seen here: http://www.deviant...eviation/26099920/
3) It was undisturbed until I free-climbed that left door to check out how well the boarding was on those 2nd floor window; the place is pretty secure.

Thanks-- I agree that the third is my weakest link, but it is one of the better shots this month and I thought that 3 was a good number of photos to post for critique... so there 'tis.
Hope I run into you this summer when I'm exploring MSP

Shots look good man. Looks like it was worth letting you use my pod during the last shoot, but I still wonder what some of my shots would have been like.
And it's still too bad we didn't do anything to show how clear the ice was in the room with the spiral staircase. You could see through the ice for a good two feet. All the way to the bottom in some areas. So freakin' clear...

Thats awesome man, the place looks really sweet, it's always nice to know it's not tagged too. That pano is awesome too. This powerplant I go to has a little tagging here and there but there is so much stuff still inside it's awesome.

I had this idea: We set up the tripods in the back area behind the coal agitators where the ice sinks, then we crawl to the staircase area, open up our shutters, then pop the flash in to the ice. If we get a lot enough angle we can get glowing ice illuminating the bucket loaders and spiral staircase with the silhouette of the agitator!
It's getting very comfortable outside, so maybe we should plan on a trip in this weekend. This time we need to back lighter, though--the packs were we wearing were dangerous the way they snagged during the ash silo climb and the man-o-vator descent.

My favorite is the first one, it really has this kinda spooky feel to it. I like how it just a hint of color in the pool of water and the decay on the staircase.

Great shots!

Thanks, man.

the decay on the staircase

That's one of my favorite things about the staircase: The high-water rust level!
I think that staircase shot is the best from the month.

Really cool lighting in the first one. The second one is my favorite of the three, I love it.

"We have to show these men and women freedom by enslaving them, and show them courage by frightening them." "At the time, my life just seemed too complete, and maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves." "This was freedom. Losing all hope was freedom."

Thanks much.
Now that I have ample positive feedback, I'd like some people to come forward and tell me what needs improvement. Come on guys, you can deal it back to me! The UE gods have observed my criticism on more than one occasion, they can see that a couple, if not all of you have assistance smiting thine artistry!

Everyone of those is an incredible image! The composition of all three is very strong as are the contrasts in the B&W prints. I really like the soft/cool colors in the staircase picture, they convey a sense of cold and finality. Great work!

Thanks, lhs!
I'll watch you on deviantart, too.
I know whenever I post some good photos on UER because that's when my dA watch list explodes! I think I met five or six people on this thread with accounts to their art on dA.

Welcome to UER, lasthourstand!

the first is brilliant.

the second two... lost something in the conversion to black and white, i think. the midtones are a bit flat.

how did you execute the conversion? it might be worth seeing if a little more subtlety could be captured using a different desaturation method...
