DON"T LOOK DOWN!

Quite nice content-wise, though I'm not one to comment on style. Nice old bridgie.

That looks like a neat location. It reminds me of a longer trestle in my area that I was walking across one day when everything went all "Stand by me" - let's just say it wasn't abandoned. (but that's another story)

In any case since you are posting this in the Photo Critiques area I will give you some of my thoughts on your pictures.

Image 1 - This is a nice image but I find it overexposed. Unfortunately some digital cameras tend to run into this issue on overcast days. It's not really a fault of the camera, it's just that the range of light to dark (latitude) that your sensor is able to capture is too narrow to allow the camera to properly expose everything in the scene. That's why the sky in your shot is almost completely white when in reality I am sure it looked much more like the sky in your final shot.

There are a few ways around this limitation. The easiest thing to do would be to adjust your exposure compensation perhaps -0.5 or even -1 below what the camera "thinks" is the correct exposure (you should be able to find details on this in your manual). Once the image is on your computer most image editing applications will be able to restore the contrast to your image to approximate a proper exposure.

Another method to try "if" your camera supports it would be to capture your images in RAW format. Raw captures include significantly more information in the highlights (bright) than is normally used when you camera creates a jpg. An image converted from RAW probably could be adjusted to include much more detail in the highlight areas. (Again you will need to refer to your manual for more details on this.)

Thirdly if you have access to a recent version of Photoshop you may be able to retrieve some details in the washed out areas with the Shadow/Highlights tool.

Image 2 - My comments about overexposure also apply to this image. Although there is little sky showing, the entire image seems too bright and low in contrast. I do however like your lower viewpoint for this shot but it might have been more effective if you used portrait (vertical) framing and included a bit more sky and less of the greenery beside the trestle.

Image 3 - I really like this image - the exposure seems better and the low viewpoint is nice. One thing though, I think the sepia effect is way too strong. If it is your on camera effect then there is probably nothing you can do about this but if is from software you may be able to fade or weaken the effect so it doesn't overpower the content of the photo. Think of sepia as spice in your food, some is nice - too much overpowers the "content".

Image 4 - I like the idea here but the image doesn't do anything for me. It's just a picture that shows how high you are but it's not really artistic.

Image 5 - Now this shot is a better execution of the idea you had in the previous image. I really like the framing with the converging lines on each side of the image. I do however think that this shot would be better in colour. B&W images tend to need strong contrast to be effective.

Image 6 - This is a much better exposed image. Notice how much more detail you have in the sky than in your other images and how the colours seem more vivid. The simple explanation for this is that the pictures was taken looking away from the brightest part of the sky so your camera was not blown away by too much bright glare. You should try to get this much sky detail in all your shots. Compositionally this shot would be better without the shadows showing in the bottom corner. Also, it would look better if the section of the bridge showing at the bottom was straight across rather than tilted at a 3-4 degree angle.

Overall I think you took some decent pictures. With a bit of work you can take some great shots!

Thanks for sharing.

All of them need to have the contrast bumped bigtime.

as far as artistic merit the second one is the best of the bunch. the rest seem a bit pedestrian and the colors are flat. bump the contrast on the rest and it will help a lot.

Detroit gave you some good specific advice.

uh, i don't know about the second one being the most artistic, the composition is really bad as the horizon is touching the top of the photo w/ the sky barely poking in, the big mound on the left obscures the bridge, and there is no real focal point.

They look a little underexposed and could use a little more thought into composition, but the subject matter can be really interesting, especially the girders.

Today is your way out...

my favourites are the first, third and last one. tho on the last one, its kinda sad since we see your shadows, and it kinda takes off the great calm mood of the pic....i love the angle on the third one and the colors, and i just adore the beauty of the landscape on the first one! very sweet stuff!

I agree with the general consensus that the 3rd one is the keeper from the bunch. It brings to mind the old West for some reason, not quite sure why. I also rather like the 4th one because of the perspective on just how high up you are. I think the last one would be a spectacular shot without the shadows (well, it's still a spectacular view, but the shadows insert people into a shot that doesn't want them). I love the wilderness in the distance juxtaposed against the rusted, graffiti covered girders.
