Shots from a recent trip to Birmingham, AL to explore with the rest of the S(ue) crew. Shot on Digital Rebel 300D with both Sigma 70-300mm and Canon 18-55mm kit lens. Circular polarizer was used on some shots near sunset time.

From top to bottom, left to right...

1. Cool grouping of similar shapes. Were all the whites dull like that, sort of off-white?

2. Not quite sure what it is.

3. Cool prespective. Stairwell looking down? Or a crawl space looking horizontal?

4. Assuming that you used the built-in flash to light up the desk, it did a good job not to overexpose the details in the documents. I love finding trinkets in desks like that and seeing what people stored away.

5. Beautiful colors, interesting shapes that are almost pornographic.

6. Nice textures but I'd like to see more details in the rust. Do you use a tripod or do you shoot handheld most of the time?

7. Not bad, the chair is not super exciting though.

8. God bless the polarizing filter! Those clouds really pop.

9. Mmm. Sunset? Leaning towers, from your wide angle lens, but not much you can do about that.

1. I actually desaturated that photo a bit. Not much, though, and the original colors were not far off. I usually don't adjust saturation, I usually only adjust shadows and contrast. Of course, JPEG's are horrible about their color loss.

2. This is a ventilation pipe on the roof that was at a strange angle. The diagonal-like shape hit me in the right way and I decided to take the shot.

3. Looking down the stairwell from the 16th floor. Those shots are always fun yet they scare me because I'm always worried that my tripod mount will fail

4. I actually used a Xenon light to illuminate the desk. I was quite happy with how that turned out. I despise the use of a flash, personally, but to each his own. I prefer natural light anyday and if I have to light paint I use Xenon lights because they give a more natural color than LED lights. What I found funny was that every office we saw, there was always a note or two that at the end of the note, always said "Roll Tide." I guess they take their football pretty seriously in Alabama

6. I use a tripod for almost every single shot I take. The problem with the building we were in was that there was so much backlighting I did the best I could in the short amount of time we had. Also, I just got my Sigma lens, so I'm still getting used to macro mode and the funky focusing that it employs sometimes.

8. What really pissed me off about this shot was that I couldn't get to a spot where there wasn't a tree in the shot. 180 degrees of the stack was on the ground where I was standing and the other 180 degrees were over a 25 ft cliff where I couldn't stand.

9. I know, I know. I broke my own cardinal rule about sunsets. I hate 'em too, but it was the last shot I took as we were leaving. It signifies the perfect end to a perfect day of exploration.

Do you have any recommendations for a Xenon light? This is the first that I've heard of them. I'm looking for a solution to light up pitch black areas and still have it look good.

I actually bought a tiny Brinkmann at Walmart. It is bright as the sun. It requires 2 Lithium CR123A batteries. It lasts about 4 hours total, but is great for lighting up an area.

that is an excellent flashlight. it accepts surefire P60 lamps. order CR123A's off the internet for about $1 apiece. it can be had at your local target store for <$20. word up.

True, I usually buy the box of CR123a's from Surefire.com. CVS and Eckerd's will charge you like $8 a piece for those damn things.

The desk shot is my personal favorite. I like how you lighted only the top of the desk itself and not the background or floor at all. Nice angle of light...and dark backgrounds always get me excited - except with most on-camera flashbursts. I agree with you on that.

I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop.

All your brightest colors are orange/yellow and blue -- have you noticed this? I have a habit of shooting the same colors for some reason. It took me a while to actually notice, but now it is my official favorite color combo.

the seventh and ninth are by far my favorite. i like in the seventh one how you mixed the almost ancient looking background with a relatively modern chair. great atmosphere on all of them
