|  | | | I took a shot recently that I was extremely disappointed in. It wasnt so much a composition issue or anything else, it just looked NOTHING like the door actually looked in real life. Everything around this door was dark and dismal and earthy tones to no color at all, and in the middle of it all is this dandelion yellow door. I thought it was going to be a really cool pic but, it sucks. The door is actually 10x's as vibrant as the yellow that I got in the picture. I am using a digital so my options are limited, any ideas?

| | | | Got a tripod? try 2 exposures. One for outside, One for inside, and blend them later in photoshop or something like that. I dont think the right digital is limiting at all, But a tripod can help even with the wrong one. Does yours have a manual setting?

| | | | Unless my camera has something I havent found yet, I cant take a double exposure or a timed shot. Im using an Olympus Camedia C-211. I really miss my slr at times like this. Then again, maybe Im nuts and it wouldnt make that great of a shot after all. I just remember walking up on the back of the house, and thinking, WOW! The yellow in the middle of all that dead and decay was just screaming at me.

| | | | First off, go vertical with your camera. Then try to change positons just a bit until you get an agle and distance that brings out the image that you're looking for. After you have the composition that you want, get the image into photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or any other image editor that'll let you select the door, then adjust brightness and contrast of just the door to bring our what's inside the door without totally blowing out the outside. You can also set your camera to a night shot mode (it has one), and zoom in to the door and take a timed exposure. You'll need a tripod for this. It'll bring out the yellow door but it'll also blow out the foreground. Reset your white balance to cloudy or semi-cloudy. That always makes my images a little warmer.

| | | | You need to take two shots...not a double exposure. Take one shot and meter for the outside, take another shot and meter for the inside. You can either just overexpose the shot for the inside, or you could actually bring the camera inside, find out what the exposure should be for the inside, then bring it outside again and take the two shots with one set on manual mode with the meter reading you got inside.
Does your camera have a histogram? If so, learn how to use it.
Blending the shots in photoshop is easy. There is a photoshop action to do it for you out there, but I don't remember what it's called. I am considering putting together my own action as well that will be significantly better than the one that's out there. The key, though, is getting two IDENTICAL shots. Use the same aperture if possible and just vary the shutter speed and DONT BUMP THE CAMERA in between shots.

| | | | I don't know why everyone always suggests blending photos first. If all you ever do is photoshop double exposures you'll never learn how to use lighting properly.
The double exposure technique should really be last resort, for extreme situations.
All you need for this shot is a nice fill light. I'm sure you have a good, bright flashlight at home. Do the same shot but with the light positioned inside so that it's lighting up as much of the door as possible. Then let the camera meter off the outside of the house so that it's properly exposed. Having the door nicely lit inside will make it really pop like you wanted. Maybe go closer to sundown so the light outside isn't so intense that you get a fast shutter speed and can't see the light inside at all.
The only thing you'll have to worry about is the colour balance of the flashlight and the sun being different.
Set your white balance to tungsten and the inside will be the proper colour, while the outside will have a blue tint.
Set your white balance to daylight (or in the case your shot cloudy) and the light outside will be normal, while inside it'll be a bit more orange/yellow than normal.
If you really want to go crazy get some blue-tinted plastic cellophane (like gift baskets are wrapped in) and put that over the flashlight. That way all your light sources will be relatively the same colour.
I'd also try to fill the frame in that shot completely with the drab aluminum siding (to give a good contrast with the now screaming, yellow door) or pull back a little to give a bit more context with the rest of the house.

Thank God someone else believes in composition before taking the picture. Photoshopping is too easy when you have digital. Photoshopping is unnecessary when you set up the shot right in the first place. Great work Brendan!

| | | | Thanks for the comments! Sorry I didnt respond sooner but my entire house was plagued by the flu =S I think I may have found a solution. As I recall there are no large buildings right behind the place and sunset might just cast the lighting I need. Im going to try that first as its the simplest solution =P
