| | Tabi Boot Recomendations < on 2/7/2006 1:49 AM >
| | | I'm sorry if there's a thread on this somewhere- I searched, but not deeply. I'm looking into a pair of Tabi Boots, and I was wondering: Should I get short
or long ones?
What is a reasonable price for a pair? Are there any features I should look for? Do they come waterproof? Oh, and do you think they make them in any extra- wide sizes? (I'm a hobbit boy.) Anyone with any tips, links, or ethnic jokes, the input is much appreciated. Thanks all. edit: pics and one other thing [last edit 2/7/2006 2:35 AM by Blue90 - edited 1 times]

| | | I've no expert but i've purchased to pairs of tabi in my life. The first pair were poorly made, velcro enclosures.. cheap overall. My second pair was an extreme improvement: Cool East Market - Tall Jika Tabi Boots The metal hook enclosures work outstanding for me, and the soles are well made. As for size I decided to start small to ensure a tight fit--I overcompensated and they turned out being way to small. Cool East Market had suprisingly good service, they were understanding and simply let me return the tabi for a pair that would fit; No questions asked--I would definitely consider them when buying. I'd also recommend the Tall/Long boots compared to the short ones. Last of all, you'll most definitely want to purchase a pair or two of Tabi Socks. They're a must to ensure total comfort. .cringe.

| | | Yeah, i wear size 11.5, and that store doesn't carry the split- toe kind in that size. Thanks Cringe, but why is it that long ones are better?

| | | I prefer the longer ones because I imagine they feel much more 'snug.' I haven't even tried on short ones for that matter. Long ones simply provide for a little more protection or a second skin against brush such as briars...

| | | I wear short tabi, with the metal hooks. I like the hooks better than the velcro, much more secure feel. I'd also suggest picking up a pair of sport insoles to wear in the tabi (though you need to cut the insole into tabi toe shape) because it makes them so much more comfortable...

90% sure they will come in your size there.. thats where ShinKen buys his newest ones and he's about that size I think.. it may be sized in Jap scale though which it's like a 28 or something.. They also have alot of different kinds and styles let alone color, or steel toe.. the sole is 'suppose' to be ALOT better then the normal crappy ones you will find around in the US.. This is all going off what my friend says, persoanlly I just wear boots..

I've had the same pair for a few years now, I've worn them all over the place, across pretty much anything you can imagine, and they're still fine... Some places in Japan you can order all different kinds; waterproof, spiked, steel toed, etc...

Good god, those metal hooks are HORRIBLE! The velcro ones are much more comfortable if you get a pair that fits properly! The velcro DOESN'T dig into your heel/ankle, and the velcro DOESN'T cause the material of the boot to wear through prematurely.
Posted by Jester I'd also suggest picking up a pair of sport insoles to wear in the tabi (though you need to cut the insole into tabi toe shape) because it makes them so much more comfortable...
|
You really need to do this, the tabi boots come with virtually NO padding in the sole, and even stepping on a loose rock will prove quite uncomfortable without an insole.

Funny, but I know from experience that I've worn them to the mall and other very public places and not had anyone notice. I've even worn them at UE meets and had to point them out to people. You'd be very surprised how most people don't notice them at all...

| | | I would think getting ones that are side zip would be good or even sewing zippers into place would be good.. As far as people knowing people hardly look up or down.. IF people did happen to notice it yer likely to get some funny looks, but I doubt they would notice, at least often...
