| | | Asbestos Question < on 1/29/2003 9:33 PM >
| | | Got a question about asbestos, in case you didnt read the title. (Oh im new here btw, so hey everyone). Me and my friend are planning to check out some steam tunnels under our school, but we're not sure if there's asbestos in them or not. We asked one of the science teachers there, and he said that asbestos had been used in the school's construction (1960's) and that they'd been conducting some tests recently to detect the asbestos levels. The thing is though, that the entrances into the tunnels are grates in the sidewalk, and the grates have holes (1 inch x 3 inches, maybe about 40 per grate) in them. So wouldnt that be a health hazard if they had asbestos in the tunnels that could get out on the campus? Plus we saw maintence personal who were down there early in there year and when the climbed out they didnt have any respirators on. Plus I've heard that most steam tunnels dont use asbestos in construction.
Maybe Im being paranoid, but I want to know if we should bother to shell out the cash for respirators. I mean, to me it seems like we shouldnt have to and it would be pretty safe, but then again we are new to the wonderful world of urban exploration.

| | | It's your lungs, I'm more willing to risk it because I'm sure that one of the other activities in my life will kill me long before the asbestos in my lungs. I do however use a mask with an asbestos filter when I know that there will be asbestos present. BTW many pipes have asbestos lined insulation, not just steam pipes but water, gas, oil, air... or any other type of pipe in a steam tunnel may have asbestos covering on it. Generally these coverings are safe unless damage has been done to the outer jacket. Like the post above says.... Better Safe Then Sorry

| | | You should read Ninj's articles on steam tunnels at U of T and York, I would think they do have asbestos if they are carrying steam (asbestos is to prevent things from catching fire after all), there is no harm in wearing the masks.

| | | Without proper protection, I wouldn't set foot down there. Steam tunnels are cramped and the amount of oxygen in there would be less than desirable. The density of asbestos fibers in the air would most likely be higher than the safe levels.
When it comes to a serious issue like asbestos and the possibility of a serious endangerment to my life, I rather invest money in it and have piece of mind. Then again that's just me.
