Your answer confirms what I've been told before that opening and closing JPG's deteriorates the quality. So, for the "tourist snapshots" jpeg's are convenient but , in the long run for the important stuff I should use RAW format?

Just opening then closing a jpeg file does nothing to it. If you change ANYTHING while it's open and then save the change, it gets recompressed. jpeg compression "throws away" data that it thinks is not needed then interpolates the missing data when you open it back up. The more times you compress the image, the more data is thrown away or lost. The interpolation has less to work with the rebuild the image the more you change it. Hence the term "Lossy compression scheme".

OOPS!
The cushions were gone already and it sure burned up good. That was from my lake house in Bowie where we did what I called mass reduction through thermal induction.

I know what you mean!
Once I found how to record new batch processes in PS, I let the pooter get most of the headaches. I'll never have enough time to figure out everything PhotoShop does.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

i shoot film and then scan it into Photoshop. (currently saving up for a dslr)
since i usually just get my film developed at Wal-Mart (they use an automated process that tends to flatten the image), i end up adjusting the color and levels sometimes quite a bit to get the image to more closely resemble how I remember the location.
i'd suggest getting Photoshop, it may be more than you need, but when you become more familiar with it - it has all the options you could want.
