| | | I'm trying to approach this systematically, do close-ups work better with - a single subject - hook? a single subject with secondary elements - switch with conduit? or more complex - webs and wheels? Or in the end does it all come down to the basics, subject, composition and light?

Yes, but my feeling is that "a single subject with secondary elements" is the easiest to pull off and makes a good general purpose approach.

| | | I think most folks on here prefer the close ups of the peeling paint and rusty light switch stuff. I like the big pictures because I want to see the whole room or the interior wide shot of the factory the light switch was connected to. Its a personal choice I think but you'll get more accolades with the close ups. Cobwebs can be cool too.

| | | #2 is my favourite, the subject is quite clearly defined and does a good job of filling the frame. It's slightly off dead on, which I find annoying. the 2 pipes anchor the switch to the edges of the frame, reminding me that the switch is just a part of a far bigger system - kinda. #1 it's a hook.

| | | Im not a big fan of selective depth, one and three dont do much for me, but I think you pulled it off well in number two. Well composed shot, and you worked the DoF in the right places to make it interesting, whereas it might not be as good without it. Just a nice angle on the shot .
