A jolly convention? Why thats a smashing idea! I'll set up a booth in the main conference room and hand out those maps with all the DFW locations. Maybe have some name tags printed up with our screen names and real names as well! We could even have the hotel shuttle drop us off places. "Texas Pacific Warehouse please" But best of all we can hire a motivational speaker to start it all off! coool...

Noooo, you wouldn't put people's real names on the name tags but the hotel shuttle idea would be kinda neat, huh? "Ok everyone, Bus A is for Swift Ruins, Bus B is for T & P Warehouse. All of you tunnel rats need to form a line in front of the drain grate at the west end of the north parking lot." Oh, and you can make up maps if you want, just make sure all locations are at least one block off and attach a disclaimer saying that all locations are fictious and the con as a whole is a figment of everyone's imagination.

" Wait! Is this the Swift bus? I wanted the Drain bus...Did you catch the lecture on lock picking? AWESOME! Oh and the laminated list of local 24 hour bail bondsmen was a nice touch. I heard they were giving away free flashlights and spray paint at breakfast but I missed it. Stayed up too late sorting my photo collection of pictures of Noah Vale's butt..."

I distinctly said that the drain tour started by the grate BESIDE the bus, not IN the bus! Here, have a Scooby Snack and relax, you'll get another chance at the drain next year. Oh, and ya liked that laminated list, did ya? We're gonna get to talk to some of those guys on the list as well as some nice people from the County DA's office. Sweet, huh?

I think the point of all this sarcasm is that the convention should be as little like one as possible if it were to go down without going down in flames. Sure it would be funny and ironic if it was like a real convention but not at all a good idea. Other than that, I'd say you should contact the people who planned OPEX and find out how they did it and what they learned worked and what didn't. They should also be able to tell you how to get people interested.

Now, back to your sarcasm program.

Let it never be said that whatever our even is going to be called, that it was, or is going to be like a convention.

Even as we speak, I am sifting through the forum. If the forums don't divulge their secrets, then I will ask them. Appearently, people like it when you use the "search" button or some such thing.

Ok everybody! This is just a reminder that the Dee-ef-dub Meet & Greet is happening this Saturday. I know that some of you are too far away to attend and some of you have already said you're going to be there. That's cool, I just wanted to throw this out there as a reminder for anyone that might want to come will know that this event is coming up.

It's all well and good to say "It should be here! It should be there!" but what is needed is for a group of explorers in that area to get together and actually make a proposal, and set up a "bid".

This year, Colorado plans to bid, and I've heard rumblings of a possible minneapolis bid. Not sure how final those are, however.

Do you guys even pay attention to what's going on in other forums? Melancholy! Here's your chance! Does anyone really want OPEX here?

To be honest, I have been rather busy with non-ue(r) related things, thus I have been neglecting the forum for the past few days. Still sifting through a ton of old posts when I get the chance though. All will be discussed at the next meet-n-greet.

I think that a "convention style" meeting would be more formal, and I think we need to stay away from that aspect. However, in the event that it did happen, I don't think it would be as bad as you would think. Think about it, ravers have parties all the time. They get messed up and have sex with each other and what not. True, they do get busted, but if we aren't doing anything other than having a convention, people don't have a reason to mess with us. We can sit around and discuss sites, and buildings and what-not, and nobody can do anything about it. If we actually go somewhere, and lots of people know about it, then it is a lost cause...I hope you guys can follow what I am getting at. You can have a convention that discusses the activities in question. But, you don't have to let anyone know that you are going exploring with a small group at a time. We could just make it a weekend convention thing.

Sorry, I am NOT having wierd, messed up raver sex with you guys! I feel strong sense of comaraderie with you guys but that's as far as it goes, ok?

(Of course, if your 18 or over, female and good looking, we can talk about it...)

haha I was say that it would be harmless to hold a urban explorer convention because far worse things go on on a much larger scale and on a more regular basis

*sigh*

Convention as you know it is not how OPEX is set up. At all. It's basically like our monthly meets plus a whole lot more people, and then everyone breaks off into informal/semi-formal groups that merge in and out of each other like fat globules in a glass of water for the weekend. All the while exploring things and going about doing basically whatever they please.

I figure I could care less. I am just saying that, IF there was some sort of "convention style" get together, that we wouldn't really have to be secret about it.

Are you trying to say I'm fat??

Honestly though, there is no reason for even a large scale meetup to be very public. I think as Noah said, it should be more personal and more like a bunch of people getting together to share thoughts and experiences about a common past time. I think this could probably be done if someone was willing to volunteer using their back yard and grill one day and then meet at some free meeting room at a restaurant the next. Personally, I think renting out some convention hall is not "dangerous", just completely unnecessary.

Not entirely related, but I'm gonna have a party sometime in mid-late May to celebrate the end of didactics.
