I wouldn't pack your bags just yet.
We may have our stuff in order in time to have it coincide with your retirement party.

Dokk,
I love ya brother but......
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

I'm just trying to think of something that could start small then grow into something big like OPEX and some events or something that would attract people and make them want to come. It doesn't have to be like I suggested but it's gotta be something that'll make people want to come here and meet and something that they'll talk about after they go home. Twist my ideas around or throw out a new one.

This time around I figure it ought to be in soley in Dallas. Mostly on account that they have the most locations, have decent public transportation, and as far as I know of, has the most active explorers.

Format? Your old fashioned meet-n-greet on Friday night? If so, where? Should we eat at a restaurant, rent some place , cater? Should we all chip in money for food or whatever, or should we be mostly to fend for ourselves, do we want any sort of entertainment? One thing is for sure, there will be NO dumb "get to you know" games. I can't imagine a thing like this lasting too long because people will most likely be tired from getting here, and/or wanting to wake up early, and I don't want any awkward silences or anything because everyone has met everyone and there is nothing left to say or do. 2, maybe 3 hours at the most. Maybe not even that. Questions, suggestions, better ideas?

Oh yeah heads-up, I will also be starting a user board for all this stuff.

I was kind of looking forward to those ice breaker "get to know you" games

suggestions:

1 well known explorers stand behind a screen with just their bare feet visible and the attendees try to guess whos feet belong to which explorer (Barry is not eligible to participate in this one as we've all seen twinkle toes in the db)

2 dinner will not be provided you will have to find (or catch) something edible while exploring and bring it back for a communal stew pot-luck type dinner

3 photo scavenger contest you must shoot a digital picture of a famous explorer getting arrested OR being targeted by elite SWAT or anti-terrorism teams using laser weapon sights

4 dokks geocaching safari treasure hunt LAT/LON coordinates will be provided to several "special treasures" left in area abandonments by Noah Vale. to be considered a winner you must sign "the log"

5 u.e. excuses essay contest limit of 500 words or less on why you cant go exploring eg; 65F is too cold, theres too many grassfires, theres nothing left to explore use your imagination

6 beard contest participants will be judged on beard length and fullness as well as grooming hehehe better stop shaving now

Then my feet are eligible in the "Who's Feet" game. I can wear a disguise! Nah...No way to disguise gorilla feet...

I would think a good start as to where to meet would be to hold a poll here to see how many people would be interested then call the meeting planners and smaller hotels about meeting space. get prices then throw that out to the population here. You would have to reserve your place at the meeting and send in a deposit as the price would be dependant on how many people and I'm not gonna fork up $800 to make up for the fact that only two people showed up. Ask the hotel meeting planners for help on this as they are pros at putting things like this together. Keep in mind, they'll wanna sell ya hotel space too so we'd have to know how many people would want rooms, would we want a meal with our meeting or whatever. Just call and tell 'em you're new at this and need help, they'll be happy to help.

Alright, I am starting to think this is not going to happen this year judging by the activity, or lack thereof on the forum, so... I dunno. Later I guess.

Don't get discouraged. start out by setting a meeting date. Then call around to some meeting planners at some hotels. Tell 'em whatcha wanna do and get some ideas about prices for a meeting room and possibly rooms. Find out how much it'll be for 10 people and 20 and 30 people. Get a range of prices. Then sit down and come up with some ideas on what to do with these people while they're here. Work out the basic logistical questions like accommodations, activities, and transportation then throw out your ideas here or at the meet-n-greet. I think the meet-n-greet would be better because we know those people are interested in networking and would be most likely to attend a larger function in the area.

If we have to pay for anything other than food, I'm not at all interested. Fuck hotels, fuck convention halls.

Honestly, I really am not too big on the idea of hotels or convention halls myself either. Of course, this means that people would have to be gracious enough to house fellow explorers for the weekend. And so long as food did not cost a ridiculous sum, I would be willing to pay for that myself if it were to make or break the number of people attending.

There were some other points I was going to make but I can't remember them either right now

Ok, so screw the hotel. I can house one or two people for a weekend as long as they don't mind crashing on a couch or the floor but I thought you were talking about a convention. Maybe I'm not getting what you're wanting to put together but OPEX sounds like a convention style gathering to me.

To call OPEX a convention would be only somewhat of a misnomer. All the meetings were either in free places, such as peoples houses, restaurants with reservations, and I believe there were a few meetings at the U of T in some empty rooms, but that was AFAIK, not officially sanctioned.

A jolly convention? Why thats a smashing idea! I'll set up a booth in the main conference room and hand out those maps with all the DFW locations. Maybe have some name tags printed up with our screen names and real names as well! We could even have the hotel shuttle drop us off places. "Texas Pacific Warehouse please" But best of all we can hire a motivational speaker to start it all off! coool...

Ok! See, that's what I didn't know. All the talk about OPEX led me to believe it was more convention style and I was trying to figure out how they did that without drawing too much less than desirable attention to themselves. How was meeting information spread around? Help us out here with some ideas on what to do and how to get this together. I'd like to see it happen myself and it seems Melancholy and myself are totally in the dark about how to get this going.
