Then why are we getting the PM's if were not from the DFW area????

For that, I apologize. I adopted the meetup thing after it's original starter, well let's not get into that.... But, I don't know who is getting the PMs, and I don't know how to change that so it only goes to DFW people. I'll try to get that sorted out so yall aren't getting spammed.

I don't mind getting them, in fact, I'd love to come up to one sometime. Hopefully I can make the next one, sounds like last night was pretty exciting...

you can click to subscribe to it and maybe pick up some ideas about how you would like to run a TXOPEX or something similar

Thought I'd throw in my two cents. My crew ran APEX in Atlanta last year and did a limited release of a google earth map with all of the Atlanta locations on it. This helped enable attendees to plan their own routes if they didn't want to do the "tour" route. That was the idea anyways. It did help but our groups split into three and had one or more locals per group to direct them. I'll keep an eye on this thread so let me know if there's anything specific you have questions about.

thanks we would do well to learn from those that managed to pull off a big event like that

I just started a regular thread about it here because several explorers kept asking but maybe we should consider a user forum

Am I the only person who has been thinking about this? Time to get the ball rolling...

Just starting from the top of my head; locations:

I think we have more than enough decent locations between Dallas and Fort Worth that will satisfy everybody, no matter what flavour they prefer (Drains abandonments, etc.) I like Simians idea of a map with all the locations around the area so people can do their own thing if they like. Which leads me to my next point, do we want a tour? Or should we just meet somewhere for lunch, clump together, and go our separate ways? What would be the best places for a tour? They would need to be interesting, modest in size, and not too difficult for a horde of explorers to get into unnoticed.

I really do not think there is much to planning this event. It ought to be easy. Just have the thing and people will come. So lets plan this out already!

P.S. Maybe everyone in the DFW area should come to the "meet-n-greet" on Feb 18th to plan this out? Maybe not? We need your input either way everybody!

EDIT:
P.S.S. I think it should be in DFW. At least this year. We could have it elsewhere in the future. But that is just me.

OK I had given up on this but honestly I dont think Texas is ready for an event and I would disagree that "not much planning" is needed but hey go for it

I'm thinking something like a conference cal meet up. Everyone go somewhere and then we all call each other and tell each other how cool the place we are is...

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

Okay, but why would Texas not be ready? What made you change your mind? I personally don't see why Texas is not ready, everyone seemed supportive. In respect to planning, I probably understated how much planning will need to be done, but regardless, I still think it would be less what everyone seems to think. But maybe I am just young and full of zeal... Or something else...

lol, well honestly the dates would be one of the last things I would be worried about. I am sure some people will disagree with me on this. However, I was thinking we could probably do it sometime in the Fall, earlier if possible. Plenty of time I think. I guess I also like to think that most sites are not exactly going anywhere say within the next 6 to 12 months. Of course some sites are time sensitive, so those would just be tentative. Still ought to be more than enough places of real interest and/or fun to go around.

My breakdown of my version of planning or whatever goes a little something like this:

1. Get a list of viable locations
2. Construct an itinerary or whatever
3. Set a strategic date in the future
4. Make necessary arrangements for accommodations, transportations, etc.
5. Whatever I am forgetting, etc.

Forgive me if I am being Master of the Obvious.

Of course everything is still very much a rough draft so... Input from anyone/everyone would be helpful, even it does not happen this year or whatever.

ps: circulate a map? please dont do that

Yeah, after thinking about that some more, I am not so sure it is such a good idea after all.

And Barry? I am sorry to say that I don't know you well enough to know whether you are being serious about the conference call idea or not, but I want to say that you are being sarcastic.

At any rate, I am going to start a poll I guess to see what everyone thinks about doing an expo or what have you, this year.

Good call!
Actually more facetious than sarcastic.

After several recent meet ups, including the standard monthly meet up have been rather poorly attended,(to put it mildly...) I think some of our little community have had enough of trying to mobilize the troops. You can never tell, though. You just might be the one who can pull it off.
You go, Boy-ee!

Heh, the first meet I went to, it was just Dokk and I, since then more people have been attending since I started coming, but I dunno how long you guys have been doing this thing. It could mean nothing in the scheme of things I suppose, and it could just be all a fluke. I guess I like to think not though.

I think some of our little community have had enough of trying to mobilize the troops.

Certainly understandable, although I was kind of under the opposite impression. Well sort of. When this thread was started anyways, everyone seemed enthusiastic about it. Of course, before me, I think the last post was December 20th, 2005. At any rate, I am going to go put that poll up and see what reaction I draw. Because if support is low, I am not so sure I want to bust my ass for nothing, among other things.

But yeah, seriously it's not that far man. Noah, Allva, Mox and I went to New Orleans for the weekend once. Of course it was a couple weeks before the place changed forever... but that's not the point. Road trips are fun! And you'll probably find things to explore on the way.

Ok, My two cents. Do we really want to actually all get together and meet and network convention style or are we all looking for an event that we can participate in on one weekend?

The idea:
Geocache style. Us locals can go the several of our favorite locations and set up a small cache. In each cache is directions to another location. We start by private messaging everyone with one location then everyone just runs around for a day or a weekend seeing all the location and ya gotta go to one to see the rest. At each location is a "signup sheet" where you would put your UER handle and we collect them all after the event. The person or team with the most locations gets a big howdy (we ARE in Texas) or something.

An alternative is just tell the teams that all the places in DFW in the UE DB are game. You're only allowed to post one pic from each location. the one with the best or most pix gets the prize. Make it interesting, you have to have your foot in the picture and something we can identify has to be in the background.

We could preface this with a meeting of the masses at some location in the Metroplex but, depending on the number of attendees, we'd need a meeting room or something like that. 'Course, we could meet at a popular UE location in the area that has the room to pack us all in. How about a certain vacant warehouse west of the Dallas County line that most of us know and love?
