Oh man, out of all the places I've been to, abandoned animal slaughterhouses have got to be the eeriest places. Tonight I finally found an abandonment nearby and it turns out to be a place where avian poultry were bred and killed. The building's mothballed and is starting to show the wear of a dozen years worth of abandonment (or more... the latest date found was 1990, although fire extinguishers were checked upon recently).

It's so surreal to open a stiff door and walk into a dusty, but clean and white, room with fifty or so hooks hanging from the ceiling and the smell of decayed meat even after more than ten years. The stench isn't overpowering but reminds you of your roommate who forgot to put the uncooked chicken back in the fridge and the having it fall behind the oven.

There was even this chain-driven scraper that was in a depression in the floor. Guts could then be shoveled into this depression where it's be carried away outside to be turned into soil. Experiences like these further solidify my adopted vegetarianism. It's amazing most people don't even know these places exist, and even if they do, they have no idea of how visceral it is in there. Humbling times.

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Most slaughterhouses I have been to were boring as most of the machinery had been taken out long ago.

I've been to slaughterhouses.

Five, in fact.

I've been to a "slaughterhouse": http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=23821
Unfortunately it was just a grain mill, despite what the locals say. Interesting nonetheless, but it would have been cooler if it really was a slaughterhouse.

Yes, it is - underneath it was a small 'cart' marked Heads Only - For Removal to Mechanical Extraction Area. Check the gallery for a picture.

Nice!

heard that a hundred times... "if you knew how it was made/packed/canned you wouldn't eat it." Horseshit. If it smells good and looks good going under the nose, who cares? If it doesn't kill me, that's a plus. If it does kill me, I hope it tasted good on the way down. I've watched a deer being gutted and cut up in a garage while we were prepping a demolition derby car. Did it gross me out? Shit, I was having a cajun chicken wrap with fries and a beer the whole time Henry was slicing and dicing Bambi. And after he diced her up, we put some of the meatage on the grill and has a cookout at 3am.

We are not designed to be vegetarians... we have incisors. Our eyes and ears are orientated for hunting, we have fingers for holding weapons and killing. We are supposed to eat everything. The only thing that i think about was how long was the learning curve when primitive man was learning what mushrooms were yummy with steak and what ones were going to off you!

Slaughterhouses aren't half as eerie as old hotels and shit like that... I've seen too many movies.

I'd have a field day at one if I could find one. I still have to go to the TB hospital.
