I understand using the command will set the up like I want them but my pictures are too small and generally look kinda crappy when I try to squish them down to under 100k file size that the system requires. I've seen galleries posted where you can mouse over the thumbnail and you get this really nice, large, viewable photo, but I can't seem to get that to happen. Please help! I suggest using a photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop which has a great "Save For Web" feature which will help keep the size less than 100K. As Axel mentioned, Photoshop is good but it's not free. If you can't "acquire" a copy of PS I recommend either Picassa or Irfanview. Both are free and do resizing well. You should try to aim for 800x600 as your reduced size. Most photos will still look good as 100k JPEGs at that res.
