Hello...
| | Re: Old Carr Ranch <Reply # 3 on 11/18/2005 4:27 PM >
| | | No, sorry. When I was out there last time, I didn't have my camera with me. I'm going to try and get back there this weekend. This is a really neat place. The house burned to the ground about 25 yrs ago, so all that remains is the chimney and some of the foundation. The cool part about this place is the cave. You have to shimmy down a rope about 10 ft and it opens up into a cave created by the Balcones Fault line. Rumor has it that this cave was used during the Civil War to hide fleeing slaves as part of the Underground Railroad to the north. The Historical Marker also states that there are some Indian Burial Mounds out there, but I could not find any evidence of them. This property has been abandoned for some time now, but is completely open in terms of access. There are a number of trails that traverse the property. I believe the State or County owns its now. The only risk involved that I could see, would be snakes. I saw a pretty big black snake in a creek bed. I also wouldn't attempt to go in that cave alone, because it's a pretty desolate place and if the rope broke.... well you get the picture..... Check it out, though. It's about an hour south of D/FW.

| | | It does sound like a cool place to visit. How big of a cave is it?

the original note got deleted Another member politely suggested that you edit out the details you posted but I guess the mods found it before you logged back in. I 'll make a friendly suggestion too, not looking for angry or whining pms and flame jobs but its best not to publish addresses, entry details, real location names, real peoples names etc in a public viewable thread. It shows up on the mirror site, it shows up in search engines too. The little eyeball icon next to the thread indicates it can be seen by anyone your local cops, National Park Service, Santas elves, BATF and so on.

Hello...

| | | Sorry this took so long. There was a brush fire in this area over the weekend.
This road was the highway before I-35 was built.
Historical Marker. Erected in 1984.
Chimney ruins from old ranch house.
These brick are so brittle, you can break them with your hands.
I think this was a water well that has long since been fill in with dirt.
Entrance to the cave and the hood of an old Buick that was covering it.
Cave Entrance and rail. I would suggest bringing your own rope, the one here is very old and too short.
This is as close as I could get without falling in. Long way down and opens up in to a pretty good sized area.
Before mention brush fire. Notice how the ground is higher along the left side and by the powerline. This is actually the remnants of the old Interurban Commuter Rail line that ran between Waco and Dallas.

| | | One quick question: Do you have any idea if that "powerline" is still active? Could you provide some better pix of those insulators on that tower. I know a few insulator collecters who might be interested in them (or call up the local utility/transmission power co. and ask for info+details on that "line" if you can)

| | | Those lines are definitely still active. It's hard to see the wires in the photo, but they are there. They run into a sub-station in a small town just a couple of miles south of this spot...

| | | Thanks... they'll prolly upgrade those lines in the next few years, so Just be in the right place at the right time (Pix would be nice too) and get a string or 2 as they get taken down

You do realize that the insulators on those towers aren't the cute little paperweight size, right Tw?

Hello...

| | | Yeah, those towers are the Big Daddies. At least 70 ft tall. High voltage and high tension. I would imagine those insulators are huge... Not the cool little green glass ones you used to find on the telegraph lines.
