Hey, I've been hearing some stuff about the old abandoned train tunnels in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Anyone ever check them out? They seem like they might be worth checking out for the heck of it... Lemme know what ya'll think if anyone's been there already

When in doubt,

I believe they exist as there were many trains that went into Santa Cruz in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In fact the ghost town of Drawbridge (in Alviso) was built to link the Santa Cruz trains w/ those of the north bay.

Do you know where to enter these tunnels? I suppose one could look at all the old track maps... however a known entrance would be helpful?

There were about 7 tunnels. Some are still open. One is privately owned and used as record storage. Easy to get to for teh most part.

One thing to look for while doing railroad tunnling is old insulators that used to be used on old communications lines that litter the ground. Some are worth several dollars on up to a hundred or so dollars because of "junk" in the glass/color/shape... When you are finished with the tunnel, take a hike over the hill it goes through. that will be where the telegraph lines (if any) would have been. Just look down on the ground (or skyward if there are still poles up)

will tell you more about these signifigant pieces of American history. I used to seriously collect these things until earlier this year.

If you need more info or tips about these things: PM me.

Becareful when you find the wrights station tunnel. This is watershed land and they will probably prosecute if you are found trespassing. I got kicked out just for standing on the street!

Take a lantern when you find the western portal of the zyante tunnel and the western portal of the wrights station tunnel.

Look in the Los Gatos LDB for a few pictures I took of the place recently. It's named Wright Train TUnnel.

Side note, I found this tunnel on accident as I was looking for a back way up to Almaden AFS. Actually took quite a few fire trails in my car (NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL) and came out on this ladies' property. She was very nice about it after I explained what I was doing and let me out of her padlocked property gate. Originally she was going to call the Sheriff on me because there is some sort of big logging battle going on up there and she thought I was one of the logging people.

After explaining what I do as a hobby, she gave me her card and said to call her next time and she will guide me around. There are some other interesting sites around there she says.

David

P.S. - Should have just asked moonman66 about back roads.

N-rock,

What do you mean by "There's also a train tunnel under mission hill in santa cruz proper. "??? You don't mean the train tunnel that the tourist and lumber train goes thru, do you? Cuz that shit's weak. And wet.

Also, anyone ever been in that tunnel underneath the cliffs off fo the rivermouth down by the trestle? there's a pipe that goes in there, it's an old sewage tunnel, pretty scary and dark.

That's good intel. I confess that I never went in there but heard about it. (My time at UCSC was a hiatus from exploring.)

I did go into that tunnel by the trestle, a little ways, but it didn't seem that exciting to me.

Here's a cool link showing a lot of info about the tunnels. Sorry if this already posted in the full membership UE LDB as I don't have access to that.

i've come pretty close to visiting all of these tunnels over the years, with one or two exceptions. none of them are really worth a trip, per se, though some are quite pretty. all of the ones i visited are either quite short, wet or sealed off (most allow entry on one side, but have only a hundred or so feet of clear tunnel).

what I found interesting when I lived there, however, are a couple of natural caves (not giving anything away, but anyone who went to Porter College at UCSC probably knows about them), an abandoned mansion in Capitola, an abandoned polo club on parkland, and some very strange brick drains that go back from the beach towards town (this is perhaps the most interesting - both myself and Freak have found indications that these connect to the cities modern day storm drain system, though we have not found a successful pathway).

all of these things are fairly easy to find, entry to some is harder than others.
