Help with a Mall in a suburb of Fort Worth...

There is a mall in North Richland Hills that I need some suggestions on how to get into. Well actually there are 2 malls in North Richland Hills and I can not remember which is which (North Hills mall, or North East) anyways, one of them is abandoned. I have lived around Richland Hills all my life and I know a few places around here. When I was younger, before I knew that other people did this sort of thing I explored this mall as much as security would allow, and I got kicked out on a few occasions. Now this mall is finally abandoned and I want top check it out more thoroughly. It is patrolled dutifully by a single security in a truck. And I do mean dutifully. I have a general idea of his route, timing, and tactics. At any rate, I just wanted to know if someone would be interested in helping me find a good method and place of entrance because I am pretty new to exploring abandonments. Preferably I would want to meet up with someone and show them the mall, and what I think are good places and courses of action. I noticed a few broken windows, but they get boarded up real quick. I will try and get some pictures and a link to google maps on later. It is a pretty neat mall I think. Lots of weird nooks and crannies, this bizarre clock-tower thing, and some nice roofs. Thanks in advance for any replies, and I will even take you out to lunch if you help me !

Here are some links about the place, and it is the North Hills mall. Not the North East. At any rate, I am going to bed, but if anyone has any questions about the place, like what stores where there, personal nastalgia or whatever, just ask.

The google maphttp://maps.google.com/local?q=north+hills+mall%2C+north+richland+hills%2C+texas%2C+76180&sll=37.0625 00%2C-95.677068&sspn=45.515720%2C79.101563&f=q&hl=en&latlng=32853966,-97220714,53391148283174085

about the status of the mall; appearently it is supposed to be demolished and built over with... Another mall if I understand it correctly. There are some problems with ownership or something too. http://www.reedconstructiondata.com/index.asp?layout=articleXml&xmlId=318916247

IT is North Hills Mall that you are talking about. Personally, I think the biggest obstacle to getting in is the security. Like you say, they patrol this place dutifully and if they have any problems, they call the North Richland Hills PD who are always on the lookout for the "crime of the century" and have a tendency to over react to anything happening on thier beat. I'll drive by this week and take a look myself and see what I think.

By the way, right in that area is a tunnel that you might check out if you are interested. It goes away from the mall but leads under the freeway and there are multiple tunnels leading in two directions. There was also a homeless guy living in the entrance of the tunnel last time we went through.

Hey Dokk, yeah North Richland Hills cops are jerks about everything. I know from personal experience. Do you live in NRH? At any rate, there are a couple of ways I was thinking about getting in. Some less in tune with the UE ethos than others maybe, I am not to sure.

It looks like everyone else has been just breaking windows where Cox or whatever store used to be, but like I said they are quick to patch it up. I really do not want to do that.

The loading docks by the dillards and JC Penny, whatever store had the big mosaic look kind odd in an insecure way, and I noticed that the guard stops there a lot. To take out the trash of all things.

Where the old movie theatre and arcade used to be, there is an alley way covered by tall bushes and a retaining wall. All the doors there just have tape. I have never tried to open them yet, but I wonder if they can not help if at least at sometime if not now, that they were unlocked. They way they are taped and given the fate of the mall, it is obvious they were not going to be painting or anything. For here, I was thinking maybe a crowbar, or a lock-pick if they are. I do not know how to lock-pick. And again, I am not so I want to get in there that badly, but I mean I do want to get in there pretty badly.

As for the security guard, I seem to recall that at least one guy just hauled around the parking lot in his truck or just sat there, but I have not seen him for awhile. This other guy who drives a white truck is pretty dedicated though. Sometimes he does just sit around though. However, I did notice that every now and then, he goes back on that curvey road that intersects Glenview and in that doctor's/business park is what I guess is their office and/or bathroom. I see their truck parked there for awhile sometimes, and its where they take the trash. Ideally we would make our entrance then. On that note, I figure a daytime entrance would be best, because flashlights would be kind of obvious at night through all that glass.

If nothing else, I just want to get into that tower by the old Stripling Cox!!! I would do anything to get in there, nuts to the mall. Do you know what I am talking about?

I have checked out all the tunnels around the mall. Been doing that since I was 12. They are alright, never been very far in them. A few manholes and stuff by the creek behind the hospital, but they smell like sewers, not drains.

And Mutt12, you are thinking of the North East Malls, about 5 years ago they finished demolishing the surrounding neighborhood to add a bunch of stores to the North East. This is what caused the slow and timely demise of the North Hills Mall. I think the North Hills has only been closed for a year, maybe 2, but several years before it closed, it only had about 5 throughout the whole entire place. *sigh* good times... hehe

That is so weird. I remember when I was a kid, back in the 80's, the North Hills Mall was THE mall, while the Northeast Mall was pretty much the mall that time forgot. Then in the early 90's, things switched around and the Northeast Mall became a huge thing.

The article you linked pretty well tells the story correctly. What Burk Collins was doing was keeping alot of the existing building and turning it into a "entertainment mall", it was to have skateparks, theaters, restaurants, movies, and shops geared to sports. Was actually a cool idea I thought as a way to develop and make use of the property but create niche that wasnt going to have to complete with NE Mall. unfortunately when the deal got bogged down, Rave went to NE Mall, the skatepark went to Grapevine mills and the others just fell away. Now there bulldozing it and will build more of an open aire center like there doing all over. I havent seen the plans on this as much as I had the plans that collins had done.

As far as getting in, all I can say is be careful, I do know if your caught they will prosecute as much as they possibly can and as someone else said, the cops treat anything as a federal offense so to speak. I also thought just as a side note that there was a guard on the inside also but since the sale of everything a few months back when they had people coming in and out they may have cut him back.

Well on most days, you will see a few doors open, and some contractors or something are just scraping the place. I am rather tempted to just walk in, and talk to them. As for the guys in the red security truck, it just depends on who it is. Underneath the loading docks of the old J.C. Penny's are some boards of wood, but they are kept in place by the doors. To get past those you might be able to make a person sized hole relatively quickly with a cordless jig-saw or something. Some of the doors seem rather prone to being pried open with a crowbar. At any rate though, I think I will just wait till they start tearing it down, and then go explore. I have explored some of the 'employee only' areas and stuff when it was open, and I was a kid. The only thing that bothers me is that tower by the Stripling Cox, and the Stripling Cox itself. It closed down long before the rest of the mall did.
