I was looking at a gallery of Byberry hospital in Phili. and something really caught my eye. It was a cornerstone of one of the buildings, you know the big concrete stone with the construction date on it. Well, someone had chiseled away the brick around the top and removed all the contents of the time capsule.

This got me thinking, has anyone else out there ran into an intact or looted cornerstone time capsule? What was inside?

When the bells split up back in 1984 the Mountain Bell employees put a time capsule in the lobby of our building (Old Main - the original Mountain States Phone Company built in 1928). Well - it was supposed to be openend in 2004 - nobody bothered because the switch technology stuff they put in there is still all in use - so they're saving it for emergency spare parts....

Go to this website (my buddy Goddog's) to see scans of what he pulled out of a Byberry cornerstone. He busted this one open too but....well, let him tell it.

That is an incredible site! Tell him what a great job he did. I am very fascinated with any information I can get on the conditions of mental asylums during the 40's. My grandmother had a mentally retarded son, my uncle, in the 40's and the options that she had for his care or any help were terrible. She choose to keep him home with her. She did send him to a school for a while in the 50's but it set him back in so many ways she finally decided to keep him at home. I know from a lot of research that the life expectancy for most patients did not reach very far. I am happy to report that he stills lives with her and she still manages to take good care of him with him in his 60's and her being 87. I think if he was born in this day and age he would probably be diagnosed as autistic. But I just shudder to think of him being alone in a place like that and what it would have done to her to have to leave him like that.

Once again, thanks for the link!

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

There was supposed to be one under a fountain in denver. They kept searching for it because they were going to build the new convention center on the property on which it existed (or something to that effect). Anyways, they never really found it.....

I knew that cornerstones doubled as time capsules, but I never really gave it any more thought than that.

R. Ed- Where in the site is the info on what he found, I can't seem to find it.

The three links I've included all contain pictures and literature found in the cornerstone (a different cornerstone than the one pictured). All of the ariel shots (they exclude some later-era buildings), the "By-Line" newspaper, some of the diagrams and maps, etc. Also included were some newly-minted (back-then) coins from that year.
Here's also a link to the legendary "Opacity" site where Goddog makes some comments about the cornerstone you saw in your pic on this thread.
