|  | | | A friend of mine and I have been working on a documentary. It's about the UT Steam Tunnels. We have started a website with an 18 min segment of the documentary. It's all about UE. Please check it out at www.UTtunnels.com and let me know what you think. The real reason for this post, Other than telling you about the site it to ask a question. Anyone in the area been in the tunnels? If you have we would love to conduct an anonymous interview. We would also like to take a few people to check them out if we can swing it. Let me know what you think and if you would want to go.

my guess would be that once the university dicks find out about this so called documentary nobody will ever be able to explore there again

Yep. I suppose it's one thing to make a documentary about UE, but it seems to me quite another to go and name a website uttunnels.com to promote the exploration of a very active site by name...a site where people have been busted and prosecuted in the past. It will be a very short time before the powers-that-be find this site, and put the kaibash on all the fun.

We are not going to get them shut down because they are already shut down. We can thank the kids who broke in while Jenna Bush was attending for that. We are making a point to preserve the shut down tunnels. I was asking if anyone wanted to go because I think that we may have found another way in thanks to some sloppy construction. I wanted to take some people in to see it for what could be the last time ever. As far as the website goes...PLEASE go to the site first before you get your panties all in a wad. The site has a video and a forum...thats it...no plans...no maps...no entrance points...oh ya and NO DATES, this could have been shot years ago. So what I am saying is that this will not make it any harder than it was before to get in them. In the future I will do my best to be more clear from the beginning, Thank you for your patients. Sorry.

My name is Mark, I am the guy responsible for the UTtunnels website and documentary.
I am a grad student at St. Edward's University studying ethnographic film. I meant no harm to the urban exploration community by exposing the tunnels to the public and by creating a website.
I consider myself lucky to have met Zatoichi. His insight and help had a profound impact on my film, however, he is in no way responsible for any of the attention brought to the tunnels, or for the website.
He is a good friend and was an invaluable informant into the culture of urban exploration. Please direct all your criticisms, protests and complaints to me. I willingly accept responsibility for destroying all future access to the tunnels if it so happens.
This brings up an excellent question which I posed early in the research stage of my fieldwork.
"By preserving a culture, are we destroying it"
Those unfamiliar with the UT tunnels should know that after President Bush passed the critical infrastructure laws the steam tunnels fell under federal jurisdiction...at that point the tunnels were completely off limits and essentially unaccessible. It was a miracle that we were able to enter the tunnels at all. My intentions were innocent I assure you. I only wanted to preserve the tunnels as an important cultural artifact. Initially, I was more interested in the urban mythology and folklore surrounding the tunnels.
I created the website to share the knowledge I acquired for future academics, folklorists, and tunnel enthusiasts. I admit i didn't take into account how the urban exploration community would feel about it.
As for the domain name, I pondered it for a few days and eventually went with UTttunnels... I chose it for its simplicity. I now understand your concern...it does sound a bit mischievous and obvious. I assure you that I was not grand standing or seeking attention by choosing it.
These are elements of my project that I am willing to change and learn from.
I will change the domain name to something more discreet and redesign the website.
And I will make sure the film stays within the academic community.
I apologize to the UE community, to Texas urban explorers, and to Zatoichi for receiving the disapproval of this forum which he holds dear and is profoundly passionate about.
