While I'm going to agree that this was a pretty retarded thing to do(blowing stuff up in a steam tunnel? Underneath federal buildings?), I'm going to heavily disagree with the notion that this would have been labelled a 'terrorist threat' before 9/11. Okay, these guys didn't even have enough explosives to open the door, or even kill a person. Unless they like, tied someone down and shoved the firecracker up his nose or something.

What 'terror' could they possibly have been planning with these tools? Were they going to break into the courthouse and run around scaring people with a hockey mask? Were they going to set off a firecracker in the vent near the judge during a court session? How were they planning to terrorize people?

This is simple B&E/Vandalism/Trespassing.

It really concerns me that the feds in the US have been using accusations of terrorism as an excuse to lock people away for longer than they actually deserve, when it's clear that no real 'terror' could have resulted from their actions. It starts to look vaguely police-statish when this sort of thing happens.

I take it you don't know what smokeless powder, aka nitrocellulose, is, then?

To be honest, I am surpised this did not get blown way out of proportion. Normally all you have to say is "expl0sives" and "g0verment building" and fox news along with all the rest of the bullsh!t "real media" would be all over your ass. Maybe they got off cause they are good christian boys.

In anycase... they had planned on using "explosives" underneath downtown. (OK, just firecrackers, but still.)

WHAT THE F!*@?

What is wrong with you? What in the bloody heck is wrong with you!? Just put a sign on your back that says "George W, Insert Dick Here -->"

Hrm, your plan to F yourself over didnt work. Next time try steal a 747 and fly it into that wooden door under downtown. Oh, and make sure to fly it out of the same manhole that the cops watched you fly it into. Maybe, just maybe, you will have succeeded in grabbing the Dubyya's attention and messing things up for all of us.

What exactly do you mean? This would make a piss poor explosive in any circumstance, even given proper confinement; unless of course they also dragged a canon and a canon ball into the tunnel with them.

I've spent some time "playing" with different types of gunpowder in the past. Smokeless powder isn't even explosive (it will just burn quickly) unless it is under pressure or in a very confined place (much more confined then a utility tunnel, I mean confined like in a shell casing) The firecracker was the most dangerous thing they had. I think this is a case of post 9/11 paranoia at it's best.

This issue, and especially the group being called "urban invaders" brings to mind the old debate... are you an urban explorer if you steal or forcibly break into things?

In the hacker community, a person who uses thier computer skill to steal, or damage systems, is not really considered a hacker. There was some (mostly unsuccessful) attempt at re-labeling these criminal hackers as "crackers", but names aside, the distinction is still there.

Maybe we should call people who do boneheaded things like stealing, breaking things, and popping manholes in broad daylight while carrying explosives, urban invaders instead of explorers, or some other name.

What are they freakin idiots. They give exploring a bad name. Most of the time I get to go into places that I want with a professional attitude and of course sometimes a little green doesn't hurt.

Slightly beyond my times, but my brother has told me wonderous tales of the days of BBS and other fun things..
In all reality UE has it's 'white-hats' and 'black-hats'.. sadly the only ones the public will ever see is the black hats, which only hurts us...

Except for a slight few cases.. I was reading up on some things and I saw that a russian clan led the spec ops into I think it was the train hostage situation from a way nobody every knew existed, Which is really cool when you look at it in the light where they started out just like anyone else breakin the law and trespassing and then turning around and helping thier government in such a manner

It's on the infiltration timeline. It was the diggers of the underground planet helping the gov't find an alternate way into a theatre where hostages were being held.

On the powder, you're part right. It won't explode unconfined. Now put it in a metal pipe, and it will cut you in half. Sounds to me like this was handled better than the time we made the papers. I can't believe though that they weren't charged though for having what they had and being where they were. We got more flack for walking down the street with flashlights and cameras, except for one guy we never explored with before who had night vision on him. And we were across the street. But lucky them. Still a STUPID idea.

Canada? What's Canada got to do with it? This was in the capital city of Minnesota, US of A.

Hah, sorry, I don't know where I got the Canada part..

Anyways, the term urban invaders sounds very good.

As well, could anyone link me to that Diggers news bit? I've heard of Diggers but I haven't heard that news story before, cool!
