DFW events such as UTEX?

Just wonder if there is really any interest in trying to hold events like UTEX anymore when nobody seems interested. I can think of several benefits to attending. Besides we had a blast at this last one.

1. Meet your fellow explorers in person instead of online for a change

2. Acquire Full Membership status the easy way by meeting other trusted members.

3. Compare notes with some pretty interesting people that have probably been there and done that in locations you are just now learning about.

4. Improve our "community" for lack of a better word by learning some simple rules security and precautions, first hand from those that have been down that road.

5. Or if youre already an expert and all then you can just show up to enlighten and educate the rest of us!

6. Put Texas on the U.E. event map. We got lots of explorers and locations but no real event.

No skin of my knuckles if you dont want to come, I enjoy the 3 or 4 rascals that do show up. Since Abandoned Armed Geoduck X is offline without a computer for the time being I will risk a poll and on his behalf ask that only those potential DFW North Texas member attendees vote(or other Texas Oklahoma area voters) not trying to influence the sampling but common sense says you guys from Canada Scotland or New England arent really going to ever attend such an event. But your always welcome if you do and in that case feel free to vote ;)

POLL rules: if you vote please have the courage to tell us your opinion and suggestions by replying to the thread. Its just a fun poll nobody is going to lose their job over this. Ill try to provide a selection for most everyone.

I really wanted to go to UTEX this month, but had to attend to my female friend. She's only here for two weeks, and when she called and said be at her place at 7:30, I was there and not UTEX. But, we Texans are so spread out, that UTEX is really more Dallas-based than Texas based. I'm not complaining, I live right there, but more might attend if it were more centrally located, or perhaps make UTEX a franchise for various cities around Texas? Of course, that would mean someone would have to be willing to take up the job. Bottom line, though, even if "UTEX" goes away, we Texan UEers will still meet up. So why worry too much about it? It's great to meet everyone, but it doesn't have to happen at UTEX. If anyone in the Dallas area every wants to explore with me, they just have to PM me and I'm game. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is UTEX is just one night out of thirty, why not make the best out of those remaining 29?

I'd like to exchange info with other people but the computer does it fine for me. I've been a union member for 10 years. They meet the first Monday of each month. I've been to a total of 4.
I'm also old enough to have grandfathered most here and our base of reference and interests are very different.
But for those who are interested this hobby the people who are trying to make UTEX happen are taking their time and effort to meet with you and bring you up to speed and I know for a fact that there are more than 3 or 4 who could benefit from some face to face Q&A.
As you can see, it's hanging by a thread and will probably end soon if there are more meetings that are so poorly attended. It's depressing to throw a party and have no one come. Why should they bother? If that's OK with you, then fine but if you want them to continue, it would be advisable to get off your ass, turn off the Simpsons and go meet some like minded people. It's beyond virtual reality; It's ACTUAL reality.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

I voted two, and my suggestion is as follow:

The problem with meeting at a restaurant is that it's BORING. I say we all meet up at a different (abandoned) location every month or whatever, and someone bring a Ouija (sp?) board, or a deck of cards to play hold 'em, or a keg, or some other such nonsense. Make it fun! And it doesn't need to be a sit around and chat sorta thing either, we could play tag downtown, or split into teams and go through a cemetery with an objective (find the oldest grave or something). I dunno, that's my idea. Not to say I didn't enjoy this past weekend meet, but that same format is gonna get old quick if it's done every month.

I haven't been coming on this site long, but I have talked to a few people here and I've explored with Noah Vale. In fact, he is the only other person so far, outside a couple of some family members, that I have explored with. However, I had a blast exploring with someone different, and I want to do more of that. I live in Tyler, and won't be able to make Dallas every month, but I do plan on coming up that way maybe 3 to 4 times a year for this sort of thing. I'm there more than that, but just usually with limited time. So, whether it remains UTEX or some other format, I'd like to stay on the "notice" list so that I can attend sometime. I know there are a few people in the Tyler area that explore, but it might be hard to get them all together. So whatever format is decided upon, I'd like to stay in the loop enough to know when and where. I like Noah Vale's idea of a keg and an abandoned building, as long as it didn't draw too much attention when we all stumble out.

I would suggest perhaps moving the venue to a more 'central' location. Grand Prairie or Arlington, 360 area. That might generate more interest. I would probably attend more often. I would like to contribute to the database here as I have explored several sites since I started, but still do not have level 3 access. And I would like to find out about other sites in this area to explore.

Some of the suggestions that Noah Vale had sounded fun.

And Barry Kooda, you look like you lost a little weight since your last profile picture was taken..

I enjoyed the one I did attend; I haven't been able to make the last couple of events because of prior commitments - out of town company for this last one, death in the family right before the last one.

Like Silent suggested, a more central location may be a good idea. Noah's got some excellent ideas too - and I agree that meeting at a restaurant is kinda boring.

Hey Raticus we keep hearing about you I got some Tyler questions to axtya sometime.

Anyway just to clarify, Im not proposing boring monthly meetings or even UTEX at all. Just think we need an "event" and I think a change is in order. I like the idea of the kegger at some abandoned hideout as well. In fact we've already been kicking that idea around. Im sure we can come up with a suitable spot.

i like the idea of a meetup in an abandonment. fuck, the aussies have their meetups in the drains. i don't drink beer, so i'm not luggin' any kegs. there are a few places that fit the bill for low profile enough to have a sizeable meetup and still be able to hang out. downtown rooftopping, perhaps?

I live in Austin. I'm not going to be able to get to Dallas every month to do this so I don't know if this will work but what if these things didn't happen so often? I know if this is a monthly thing it gives the opportunity for people to find a weekend that works with their schedule but the turnout is more likely to be smaller. Maybe if this was bimonthly or something, it would give people more of a chance to plan to make a particular meeting ahead of time. I haven't been to any of these since I hosted the first one in Austin so I don't know exactly what has been happening at the more recent ones but (correct me if I'm wrong) you guys aren't just sitting at a restaurant talking are you? I think that might be a good place to meet and get to know everybody but soon afterwards you should be leaving to go explore something. If not one place make it several in one night. Make it worth it! If someone doesn't show up by the designated time but still wants to catch up later, someone should be made a designated contact.

Ok, I'll end this rant for now but you should understand that out-of-towners have to make a long trip across this huge state of ours to make one of these things and it has to be worth it.

I like Noah Vale's idea of meeting up in a UE related place. If needed, I know of a very large drain we could use. And it's got enough different forks that we could play capture the flag or something.

Im not in favor of a monthly or bi-monthly thing at all I would suggest twice a year, maybe spring and fall scheduled far enough in advance so out of towners could make arrangements.

Good ideas keep em coming

I like the idea of having monthly meets that are more about camraderie than about exploring, and then maybe annual to semi-annual events focused more on exploring the everloving shit out of an area. Five people turned out at the last UTEX and that was fine with me, 'cause to be honest, much more than that and I wouldn't have enjoyed it at all.

Good idea. Maybe we should separate a monthly meet from the bi-annual big meetup. This way, if you can make it to the monthly meet, its a cool way to hang out and explore stuff. And the bi-annual meet will be one that everyone can plan for so that everyone in Texas can be there. Also, maybe the bi-annual meet doesn't have to be in the same city every time. Dallas has a lot to explore but I'm sure those that have been to other cities know that there is a lot more out there in other parts of the state.

I've only been here 3 months here shortly and only found out about these meetings last month, unfortunately things havent worked to where I could go. I am hoping to make it to next month. I like the idea of doing a meet to just meet people and then other to go explore. I've found with these type things doing it monthly is to often and once or twice a year isnt enough to keep intreat up, I'd suggest doing a quarterly meet for exploring and it could be talked over at the monthly get togethers. On those I'd suggest thinking of doing some during the day and some at night, for me nights can be difficult alot of times. I also liked the idea of moving it around to different areas of the metroplex which might encourage different groups to attend, maybe one month in dallas, then ft worth then mid cities area and rotate it around.

i like noah vale's idea about meet ups to build camraderie. being a gal i know i'd like that so i'm not out w/a bunch of guys i do not know... but really i can't make it most of the time b/c i am working on my phd and TA-ing so i am busy with school work.
i also like the idea of a meet up in the spring and one in the fall- something like that so then people can plan way in advance.

i honestly would like to see one big meet up be a road trip to that huge hotel in mineral springs or wells i forget- the one called the baker. that would be cool. maybe see what else is in the area and split up into two groups or something, one group could go to one location and the other one could go to another and then meet up and share info... something like that... hell i don't know...

thanks for the survey

Well, I would be inclined to agree with you all....i would like to go exploring somewhere, however, I love sitting around talking about past times and stuff...I'd say meet up at like the swift meatpacking plant in one of the basements....nobody cares about the place any more...
