My rebellion against the santa cursor! HoHoHo
| | Cotton mill and the Texas Steel plant (what's left) < on 8/9/2005 4:16 AM >
| | | We got into the cotton mill one day and checked it out. Several of the local UE'ers have been there. It's a place that is active as storage but not doing any sort of production. After that, we went down to check out whats left of the Texas Steel plant. almost all of it (foundries and such) have been dismantled but there are some structures left to explore. One thing to be aware of, some of the structures are in an unstable condition, so use common sense. Also, there is a construction office trailer on the west side, which has an almost complete view of the grounds. Be aware of any hazardous materials that could be stored there. We found some buildings where mold forms where stored. These ranged from small, (text book size) to huge pieces that would weigh several tons. COTTON MILL
TEXAS STEEL PLANT remnants
Anyone know what these cylinders are? They are some sort of stone or composite and look like they screw together, end to end. They were next to a huge 4 story structure that I think was some sort of air cleaning unit for the plant.
Shelves of molds.
Some of the big molds. These were in a building behind the TSP. The flashlight in them is a "D" cell about 14 inches long. (for reference)

| | | Nice, I'd like to get into the South Cotton Seed Oil Co. building again during the day. I've only been once and it was at night. Got some decent pictures from the roof and outside but want to get pictures of the inside.

| | | A couple of exploring buds went there last sunday and found even more destruction going on. Won't be long before it's all a flat dirt landscape. SS

| | | FWIW, it wasn't a cotton mill at all, but a place that pressed cotton seeds to extract the oil.

| | | Yeah, that grain elevator was in great shape but probably had one of the worst smells ever. Rotting grain = omfg. Awesome views from the roof. Was going to check out the steel plant with Noah on Sunday morning but didn't get a chance to.

| | | Looks like it was a great day! I really like the third shot, it reminds me of a giant version of one of those old rotary push mowers. As for the black cylinders, from what you describe they sound like a charcoal filter of some sort that would go in a tank perhaps. Kinda like the ones ya put in your fish tank that diffuses the air if that makes any sense at all. Very porus but traps all sorts of goodies.

The black cylinders are definitely not charcoal filters. They are very solid and very heavy almost like they are tiny iron or steel pellets pressed together. They are very solid too, not crumbly or anything like that. Dokk

| | | They look to me like rolls of tar paper. The kind with gravel on one side. Kinda hard to tell though.

| | | Hey, Kookie, How did you get banged up so bad? Fall through a floor or something? You cant be too careful. These buildings will wait (usually) so don't push your luck with an unsafe approach, no photo is worth dying for. VH
