I have the go-ahead to write a UE article for a new magazine coming out and want t do this the right way. While I know people around here and can get the necessary info and photos, I am hoping to interview people in other countries with the same interests. Specifically, the editor is looking for someone to talk about:

- Paris catacombs, Rome as secondary
- Chernobyl and surrounding areas
- Australia/New Zealand

If anyone is UEing in these areas, or can get me in touch with people who are, that would be awesome. I think it is about time that big press runs an article about UE, written by a UEer, even if I am a bit of a noob.

Any and all help appreciated!

I'm not sure if you're interested about underground structures in Poland, but that country heaps. Of particular interest is the underground tunnel system near Central Station in Warsaw.
I've never been, but have investigated the topic. Put it this way, if you don't have an army of explorers DON'T GO.
Basically, the tunnel system is rumoured to consist of about 6 levels. These tunnels are inhabited by drunks and homeless. These are dangerous and some sections are booby trapped. In the past homeless bodies have been recovered due to alcohol inflicted death, freezing (during winter) as well as a result of fire (cigarettes not butted out and the bloke fell asleep).
During war periods tunnels were used throughout Poland as a means of movement by underground organisations fighting against the enemy.
The country is also littered with war time bunkers. It is also rumoured that the famous stolen Russian Amber Room (8th wonder of the world) is hidden somewhere underground, presumably in Poland or Russia. For those who have never heard of the Amber Room read this:
http://www.ctv.ca/...87211904?hub=World
Note that the authors think that the priceless Amber Room was destroyed. Was it? Or is it still hidden underground. Different people believe different things. Who knows?

Different parts of Australia have different scales of UE icons. Melbourne has a massive drain system. So too does Sydney. Melbourne and Sydney, being large and fairly industrialised cities have a few good topsides too. Canberra, Darwin and all parts of Tasmania are small and insignificant. These places have practically fuck all. However, they can be used as a comparison of what the different Australian cities have to offer.

The best source of info is the Cave Clan. They are the largest and most established and UE group in Australia. They have pics, maps, locations as well as plenty of stories to tell about all aspects of UE in Australia, with a bit of real life experience of the French catacombs. Site - www.caveclan.org
Another bloke, Panic! is also a seasoned explorer. Been shunned by the Cave Clan he has been left to do his own exploring. This guy has travelled world wide and has a comprehensive site that has just recently been put on the web. Site - www.urbanadventure.org I's sure he is a good resource for information.

Hope this is a starter for you.

About the Amber Room....

This is again one of the thousand legends, which suggest different things, about this and that hidden to some mine etc.

I'm always very sceptical to these kind of legends and myths, as usually the authors or other people suggesting these, don't know or don't tell all the facts.

FACTS:

- Amber Room was stored in the old Königsberg castle

- Königsberg was defended to the last man. The main assault by Rokossovsky's troops lasted for three days and caused 60 000 Soviet casualties and 40 000 Germans.

- After the capitulation of Königsberg, 120 members from SS and police continued to fought in the castle ruins until all of them were killed.

- According to the eye-witness, the Königsberg castle and area around it, resembled a "cabbage patch destroyed by hail"

- Supply corridor remained open until 8th of April and two days after it's closure, Königsberg surrendered.

- After the war, remains of the castle was demolished and a "House of Councils" was started to build to the place. It's still uncompleted.

With these kind of facts in the background, a total destruction of the city and castle, I at least find it a myth to suggest that in the panic which dominated the Germans before the Russians arrived, someone would have tried to hid the Amber Room.

The soldiers and civilians were thinking more about their own lives, than anything else.

If it would have been hidden, they would have needed either a several trucks, airplanes or a ship. In the last stages of the battle, Königsberg lacked a decent runway, to which any bigger airplane could have landed. Truck convoy is one option, but the Germans lacked fuel even to move their tanks, so how they could have supplied a truck convoy?

Ship is one option, but again it is doubtful, that barges or small coastal vessels would have been used, as those were unreliable and many died when the barges went to the bottom.

If the Amber Room was on board of Wilhelm Gustloff, it's now in the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

Sorry to be a party spoiler, but when combining all the facts, the idea that Amber Room was hidden, remains a myth, just like many other myths about secret weapons hidden in the Chech mountains, modern technology hidden in a lake in Austria, gold hidden to mines etc.

Not quite as simple as that. There is more to Urban Exploration in Australia than just the Cave Clan. Though, admittedly they do dominate the scene down here.
