| | | The Hardware store was Pascal's Eaton's, Simpson's (where the bay is now) were the anchors. Steinberg's grocery store is now Deco-Decouverte. There was a Holt Renfrew and an Ogilvy's... I believe there was also Consumer's Distributing which moved across the street to the Maxi stip mall. The old Famous Players Fairview Cinema was also in the west parking lot. Adjacent to Reno.

I can't say that I remember CD ever having an outlet in Fairview, Swanny, but for sure they did do business in the West Island Mall (now Galerie des Sources) for awhile. I also vaguely recall having bought a digital watch from an outlet of theirs on Hymus (somewhere around where the Source du Sexe is now) sometime in the '70s. It was then that I first realized that 'LED display' and 'decent power consumption' are two phrases that don't generally go well together in the same sentence.

| | | there was also a consumers on st charles if my memory serves correctly. I have a case of little blue consumers pencils. They never ever seemed to have anything that was listed in the catalog, you would fill out the little paper take it to the counter, the womand would pass it to the quasimodo that worked in the backstore that we never saw more than his arms, he would come back stick his arm through the curtain saying there was none left and the circle of consumers life started again

| | | If I remember correctly, the Consumers was in the strip mall between chemin Ste. Marie and Hymus, on the west (Southbound) side of St. Chas. There is now a Timmy Hoes and a Little Ceasar's... it's directly across from the Midas.

| | | I haven't been around town much lately, so I figured I was overdue for another visit to my favourite construction site. Today's tour runs westward, from des Sources towards St-Charles... Craploads of new concrete have been poured west of des Sources. It looks like a 3-pass job. So far they've laid down just the center lanes.
Heavy equipment of the concrete laying variety lounging around at des Sources.
It's a 10 or 12" concrete road base they're laying, this piece equipped with some serious rebar.
Cute little 2 foot cube concrete boxes for electrical access. I'm guessing these will be installed in the median.
Drainage has been installed in the left shoulder, just waiting for more concrete.
Looking east, the new des Sources westbound on ramp awaits a final layer of concrete too.
Heading towards St-Jean, we encounter the CurbMaster 3000 next, just taking it easy on a Sunday afternoon after a hard week's work.
Another whack of heavy equipment sitting where last week's work ended. It's hard to determine exactly what this stuff does when inactive, but from what I could gather the first machine shapes the sides of the slab, the second shapes the top surface for proper drainage, and the third one scatches up the top for good traction. I think.
Shitloads of rebar, I'm talking at least a km's worth, on the way towards St-Jean. It looks like they still put this stuff together the old-fashioned way... by hand.
The curbs are in place for the new St-Jean off ramp.
The concrete recycling center just east of St-Jean.
The center foundation of the St-Jean overpass is exposed now and they're digging out an extra few feet of bedrock in this area. Not sure what's up with that.
In front of the House of Evil, the left hand curb of the service road has been busted up. I'd like to think that the service roads will be redone in my lifetime, but more likely this is just in preparation for building the new St-Jean westbound on ramp.
Not too much exciting to see on the way to St-Charles... The electrical dudes have hooked up some temporary lighting along the service road, and the plumbers have been busy at work installing the new drainage system. The old road bed still remains to be ripped up in this area.
A temporary weigh station just east of St-Charles. Battery operated it seems. I like the transducer in the shape of a dollar sign.
Our tour concludes with a look at the St-Charles overpass. More excavation has taken place here, but moreso in the left hand lane. It looks like the new roadway will be banked as it curves under St-Charles. Assuming the overpass holds up in the meantime.
Well, that's it, that's all for today, kids. Please don't forget to tip your host on the way out [last edit 7/25/2005 1:31 PM by Emperor Wang - edited 2 times]
