| | | I really liked mine. The biggest problem I had with it is the EVF suffered in bright light. Try to zoom in on a duck in flight, and you have a hard time trying to pick it out, then zoom in as the camera doesn't know to focus on it. It just requires some experimentation. Otherwise the 10 by optical zoom is awesome, it's a 350mm film equivalent, you can pull in just about anything, but once again tracking something with the EVF is a challenge. However, for most exploring applications, not a problem. Also you can get a wide (.7) converter making interiors even more interesting. You also don't have to go menu hunting for shutter/ap adjustments. Great camera. The typical retail is around 350, mine sold as a three month old unit for 300. Not bad for holding value.

| | | I got mine fo Christmass last year, its a pretty neat little camera. The only problem I have with it is the Auto Focus gets confused sometimes especially in low light with longer distances. If I think of anything else I will let ya know...

| | | The other gripe I forgot about is that manual focus is very impractical; not that this is uncommon for most mid priced cameras; why build in a focusing ring when the user can simply control the focus through buttons? But the problem is it's very slow and the EVF does little to help you with knowing when your subject is in optimal focus. Like I said, a minor gripe; most modern slr's digital or otherwise even fail to include a ground glass screen OR a split prism focus aid (or for that matter a DOF scale on the lens), which used to be common on MF SLR cameras. On a positive note, it's a great way to focus on infinity for taking shots of things that autofocus would spend too much time hunting around for (night photos, fireworks). Or, if you want to shut the af off, you let the af do its thing, then immediately set to MF, bang you've got AF lock! (other than partially depressing the shutter). But that is just splitting hairs; for tripod mounted field applications, you have can cursor over what you want the AF to focus on, which beats messing up your composition by moving the camera, holding the shutter, then recomposing the shot. The focus modes are plenty, and easy to get to; most changes require only two clicks to get to. Anything having to do with photometry such as ISO, quality, that has it's own button so you don't have to wade through so many menus. I liked the burst modes; Three sequential or final three, in which the camera shoots constantly and very quickly as long as you hold the shutter down, when you release the shutter, it stores the last three. Great for sports; prefocus on the area where your subject will be, start shooting as lets say a cyclist approaches; when he/ she is within your focal range, release the shutter and you've got three action shots in a row without having to wait for the AF to catch up. Or, use it to "capture a moment", start shooting and release the shutter when the subject finally does something interesting. Another grip, the continuous shooting mode is available only in full auto, and the "modes" don't let you mess with EV comp, e.t.c.. But they do this for a reason; they don't want some jerk to spoil a series of shots, then bitch about the camera and the company to 40 other people! Instead the modes are made "goof proof" but I never used them anyway. Also the "Continuous focus" mode really didn't seem to speed up time between shots; you could hear the motor hunting around , but then push the shutter and it focuses again anyway! Minor stuff, and most digital cameras have problems and quirks; avoid them by going slr, film or digital. My maxxum didn't hesitate a second before blasting off shots. The lag with this box ain't bad, but still, I'm used to film.

| | Looking at a new camera <Reply # 63 on 7/31/2005 7:07 PM >
| | | When I first bought a camera I wasn't going for performance as much as convenience, so I bought an Olympus Stylus Verve
It's a pretty nice camera, but I'm looking for something a little higher quality. I've been looking very closely at the Konica Minolta DiMAGE z5. http://konicaminol.../dimage/dimage-z5/
Has anyone used this camera? I was wondering if anybody had advice as to where I can sell my verve in order to help pay for the z5. Thanks in advance.

| | | I've heard lots of things about cameras over on photographyreview.com about various Cameras. It all depends on how well you handle the camera. The trick is to look at the features, but in the end it's all how the camera feels to you. I haven't switched to digital yet, I'm still using a 1988 minotola X-7A with a motor drive 1 attached. It makes it a little noisy, but it still takes great photographs, especially with the 50mm f/1.7 lens (nice and fast) although I would like a f/1.4. It does weight 8 pounds with the lens on it, but over all it's very easy for me to use. One day I'll get a dSLR.

| | | Although the Canon 20D is a good choice for folks that are looking to step-up from a 300D, my personal choice would be the EOS-1D Mark II. Now since the XT is offered it seems like the only difference between the XT and the 20D is size (respectively) although there are some minor differences, I just dont think it's worth the money. (the 20D that is). I currently have a silver 300D with a battery grip, kit lens, and 75-3000 telephoto. This outfit for what I shoot is perfect (I'll include sample pics). I really am not considering upgrading quite yet, but when I speak for myself on this matter, I think I speak for all photographers out there-I'm always in the market. But really, the EOS-1D Mark II has tons of pro features, so many that you probably wouldnt need to upgrade ever, once after buying the camera that is. 8.5 FPS Continuous Shooting Up To 40 Frames (20 RAW) Customizable Color Matrix ISO 50-3200 Voice record with image (up to 30 secs) 1/8000 second shutter speed The list goes on and on. Okay, so for some images I got from my kit lens: (sorry for large sizes)
[75-300 telephoto]

| | | I'm holding a best buy gift card for $250 and another for $50. So my budget for the camera is about 250, as the 50 will go to a memory card. So I need a new digicam, and have been doing some research, but there are simply too many cameras to choose from. So do any of you have a good camera in that price range that you are happy with and would reccomend. Basically, I would need at least a 4 megapixel that can do long exposures. Video with sound is definately a plus, but not necissary. Thanks in advance.

Canon, specifically the A520 is probably your best bet for that price range. For memory I would pay the few extra dollars over $50 for a 512 MB SD card.

| | | New Digital Camera. Suggestions? <Reply # 69 on 8/22/2005 11:19 PM >
| | | As mentioned before, I dropped my DC and broke the zoom and focus mechanism. I went to the photo store, and they said it'd cost more than the camera to fix the problem. I might try to fix it anyway. Soo, I need a new DC. Not expensive, and capable of taking medium quality shots. It has to be below $250. Any suggestions? My friend suggested this: http://www.tigerdi...No=1226593&CatId=7 Thx. Reb00t [last edit 8/22/2005 11:20 PM by Reb00t - edited 1 times]

| | | Minolta, Canon, Nikon, or Olympus are the brands I suggest. Simply because they made film cameras also, which in my books makes them a trust worthy source, especially when it comes to optics. Although the Panasonic digi-cams use Lieca lens, which are some of best out there. When choosing one, look at what your needs are, and go and actually touch & feel the cameras at the store.

| | | I've been considering the Ricoh line of digicams, maybe something like their Caplio GX, which has been around for a while now, and shouldn't go for too much, although I don't know if it fits into your price threshold. Their main pluses are a wide-angle (28-85mm equiv.) zoom lens, low shutter lag, a proper hotshoe and their uber (1cm?) macro mode. I haven't checked them out seriously yet, so I don't know if there's any down side. As with Canon, Minolta etc. Ricoh is an actual camera manufacturer with a line of film based SLRs behind them. For some reason, they never really broke out from their 'also ran' status, and pretty much abandoned film SLR production without even making the leap to autofocus.

| | | I know absolutely squat about cameras. Last night at a concert I was at though, I was in the loo and lo and behold, there was a shiny digital camera sitting on the floor. I took a look around, there was no one about, so I did what the next person who saw it would have done, and scooped it up. I feel bad, but I don't think the band was willing to do a public service announcement for it.;) Any way....this is a Pentax Optio 50. 5 MP,3X zoom, 12 MB with a memory card. Is this a good camera, does anyone have one like it?

| | | Hello everyone! I am new to both UEing, and photography, and this is my first post. I discovered the hobby two days ago, the very same day that, well...you know. I hope to open up new experiences and make new friends while i'm here. I'm posting because I am looking for a new digital camera. I am not much of a photographer, so i'm leaning towards a simple point and shoot camera. I went to the store and tried out the Olympus Stylus verve and I realy liked it, It's small, perfect for UEing, REALY comfortable in my hands, and MUCH faster than my old camera, I believe it was an Olympus C-725, which I had to wait forever for it to turn on, and for it to change between shooting and viewing modes. The problem i've come across is it's lack of zoom, I got used to 8x and going down to 2x seems depressing. I also read a review online that said that the verve was very ineffective in low light conditions, which i imagine i would come across often urban exploring. What I'm getting at is that I'm wondering what you would recomend as a good point and shoot digital camera for UE and is very portable. any advice, suggestions, recommendations, or free money wold be greatly appreciated. Thanks all and I look forward to getting to know you.

| | | Okay. My budget for a new DC just got bumped up, and I went out to look at the Digital Rebel XT. I found a package with three lenses and other equipment http://cgi.ebay.co...rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Does anyone have comment suggestions regarding the Digital Rebel? I looked through this thread and saw some other comments, but I couldn't really understand what they were talking about. Thx. Reb00t.

| | | Posted by punkboy_jerm I was sssooo excited to get a D70. then they released the D50 and D70s and discontinued the D70. I do not want the D50 and cannot afford the D70s. So i'm seriously considering the 350xt now. although it's so small!
I keep getting screwed with this whole DSLR transition.

Stop trying to keep up. I was having a conversation with another photographer lately. She commented on a conversation that she had just had with someone who asked "What does the 'S' stand for?" Her answer was 'Sucker'. There are thousands of pro photographers out there still putting thousands of miles every day on Nikon D1 bodies for publication (ie: newspapers). The D1 was introduced in 1999. Having the latest/newest/coolest does not always mean having the best. It's really not about what you use, but how you use it.
