| | What`s up with the st.james church?? < on 5/1/2005 11:51 PM >
| | | The other day, when I went to future shop, i realised that the church(??) was evicting the shops that are infront of the church, I guess they have this project to bring up it`s architectural value pr something, They ,ight demolish those shops. well it`s better that just having the front door entrance visible to the public eye... anyone think those buildings might be possible to explore ?? also Sam the record man is now open, its a jewlery 50% off kinda place. Anyone thinking of visiting these soon to be abandonned places??

| | | st-james is nowhere close to be abandoned, they are going to demolish the stores built in front of it in order to bring back the original entrance. They are going to build a new public place. I'm sure it will look nice. As for Sam the record man, this building is alarmed, I would forget about it.

| | | according to the article in the gazoo last year, the restauration of st james will include the demo of the shops directly in front of the church, those on the two street corners will remain as they bring in badly needed revenue, they werent as lucky as christ church cathedral being able to sell under the church

| | | The white banners they have installed in front of the church shows where they will "cut" away. Very neatly done.

| | | Yes, for anyone interested in the project, check the maps/design/pictures on the buildings that will be demolished next to the church. It's pretty self-explanatory what will be done... And if you get in the church and ask the ppl, they'll show you even more info & pics

| | | Just be careful in any of the alleys around there. The whole place is part of the fur district, and smack in the middle of the less friendly part of downtown.
Urban development is what happens when the planners are trying to figure out what to do. By the time they have it sorted, the development has already happened. |

| | | Rabid PETA activists? :-P Here's what the Saint James looked like prior to that nasty bit of commercial disfigurement. Fished out of the Notman archives, it's from around 1905. I'm looking forward to the space in front of the church becoming public again.
Dig that funky street light!

Nice pic! Anybody got a more recent one--can't place the building offhand.... You know, I was just thinking... this picture is dated 1905, and electrification was fairly new (within the previous 15-20 years). Here we are, just a century later, and some people are exploring options for going off-grid, due to skyrocketing electricity prices.... EGV

| | | A Mirror article about the "renovation" of the church. Boy, would that sign look good in my living room! http://www.montrea.../050505/news1.html A postcard picture before the facade was obliterated by storefronts
A couple of pics of the current facade
Can you say 'nondescript'? I pilfered these pics off the internet. I could swear I have some pics of the church in my own collection, but f'ed if I can find them. Speaking of churches, I read in the Gazoo that some yahoo smashed up Saint Patrick's to the tune of $30,000 in damages Sunday night. Is nothing sacred anymore?

I love that term, Gazoo.... my favourite paper was always the Star, as opposed to the Gazette. I can't remember exactly when the Star folded, but I'm sure it was before I left Montreal in 1980. A shame about St. Patrick's... hopefully nothing irreplaceable was damaged.... EGV

| | | the star folded exactly around 1980, the gaz moved into the stars building because the goss metropolitain presses were newer at the star, it was easier to move the whole office than move the presses, the presses were places behind thos picture windows since the star was an evening paper so people could see the afternoon action of putting the paper together. i was reading about the st james project, as the church really relies on that revenue they will only tear down the stores directly in front of the church.

I haven't seen the mess myself yet, but this short article from today's paper makes it out to be pretty grim...
Damage to doors closes basilica St. Patrick's Basilica on Rene Levesque Blvd. was closed to worshippers yesterday following a Sunday night break-in which resulted in $30,000 damage. Police arrested a man in connection with the incident where the east and west doors, to two of the confessionals and stained glass doors leading into the relic room were smashed with a pipe. The suspect was still in the building when police arrived. The basilica will be open for services today as usual.
Fuckin' moron. I wish he'd whacked himself in the head with that pipe before the thought of messing with our heritage crossed his no-mind.
