I was down there the other weekend, and surprise surprise there was no trash lying on the ground and *GASP* no other people there at all. I think perhaps and I could be wrong, i am thinking perhaps the novelty has worn off as I really don't see that many people there anymore.

Some of you keep saying it runs under an old canal. You are correct. It runs underneath the 3rd Welland Canal (1881 - 1932) and the tunnel runs underneath locks 18 and 19 of said canal. Hence, the Seaway cannot afford to have the tunnel collapse as the access road to the Pumphouse goes right above the BGT and the Pumphouse is used in conjunction with the Pondage area to control water levels of the current Welland Canal.

Being a member of the Canadian Canal Society, they are working at having all the Welland Canals dedicated Historical Corridors which hopefully will include the GTR Tunnel and perhaps if the government approves it, then perhaps the tunnel can be restored to its former glory!

History should be respected and preserved, not a painters canvas!

Well said Dr. G. But todays youth and even some older folks don't seem to think that is the case. I recently lost a good friend because of his "Tagging" habits. I just don't get how people are proud to have some stupid slang signature on obscure structures.
I wish that they would build an area for taggers, put up huge sections of sheet rock or whatever and let them go nuts on their own pre assigned section. Then every so often on a scheduled day, paint over it and start fresh, not before taking pictures.
I can honestly say that I enjoy SOME tagging, like in the thoth in St. Catharines, not that I condone WHERE it is done, but some of that stuff takes skill, I just wish these people would put their talents to use in the working world.

I walked to the tunnel yesterday, since I was back in St. Kits for the day, and to my surprise the iron door has been welded shut. Either by the Canal Security, or ghosts.

Anyone who's been there recently though knows that a welded door is merely an inconvinience.

officer, I don't see the big deal...

Wow! Maybe you are just one of the lucky ones that saw it JUST after it was done, because as you said, it's just and inconvience.
I am sure it's open by now

Apparently it's been welded like that for a couple weeks now, and it would take quite some force to open it. When the tunnel was sealed in 2005 the iron door was padlocked, not welded.

As for the inconvinience, look to the left of the door and your troubles will be resolved

Yeah it was padlocked back when the sealing was completed back in Oct 2005.
But that was removed within 1 night.
Welding on the other hand can be difficult...People under estimate the power of a good weld.
If they wanted to keep people out, they should have just put a HUGE slab of concrete in front of it, one solid hunk that was 6 feet thick, like they did to the old St. Davids Road Tunnel on the Golf Course near the BGT.

GOOD! I hope it stays closed, it will give the morons that go there to spray paint crap, leave garbage and cause crap no reason to go anymore.
And I will just go to the east end with my boat if I want to get in.

I am defiantly on the side of making that whole seaway property into an area for hiking, boating, and other recreational activities to promote the history of the area, remember the thousands of migrant workers who died building that great structure.

if it was revamped, cleaned up and made into a park - people could kayak and canoe through the old locks, hike the trails, and preserve the history.

Sadly I don't really think the seaway cares

Obviously they don't or they would not have blocked up the GT railroad tunnel to begin with.

I see your point, BUT I don't agree.
The Seaway does care about the area. And the history. But you have to look at it in a way of safety, and money. No matter how many signs for no trespassing that go up, someone is always suing the Seaway for injury. They just settle out of court. Think about the Seaway opening that area up to the public and the liability they would ahve on their hands. And selling it is out of the questions because that is an area that the Seaway needs to access. I think if anything they are fed up with the law suits, the troubles, the kids drinking, the damage, and just said enough was enough, seal it.
Look at Butlers Burial grounds in NOTL. They covered it with stone and dirt because it was being damaged by local kids. They said we can't afford to fix it and protect it right now, so we will bury it and when the money is there, dig it up and then fix it.

I took a brief trip to the GT railroad tunnel today July 02 - 2007 around 14:00hrs - it is no longer welded shut. I managed to get in there and have a look around.

AS a side note, the Canadian Canal Society is actually working with the Seaway to see what can be done to preserve all the history in that area. The issue with the tunnel is the total lack of respect and vandalism that these people do at the tunnel. Beer Bottles, Spray paint, why not work together or are we to continue to live in a community that prides itself on looking like shit!

The rare occasions that it gets welded shut, it's opened back up within 24 hours anyway. I have only heard of it being welded BACK shut once, and that lasted like 2 hours before someone had it open again.

Someone appears to have been cleaning up the garbage down there though, it's not as messy as it usually is.

If you want, I will meet up with you and show you how to get to it sometime.
To be honest, depending on the season, there are different routes to take.
The reason you probably haven't been able to find it is because most people expect it to run lateral to the canal, but even though the curve in the tunnel seems minimal. It actually ends up coming out at the east end running completely parallel to the old 3rd canal.

Yeah supposed to be. But if you saw it on Creepy Canada with that fraud bunch from Haunted Hamilton, then all the information and history you got was bogus. They were wrong about everything, even lied about the time line it was shot.
