What would you think of some kind of UE radio show? Say, WUER: Asbestos Radio. Ideally hosted on UER by some Canadian person (they tend to get stuff done), the show could broadcast weekly for an hour or so, with interviews and news. Some live streaming radio would make a nice addition to the community. Just a thought, and don't expect me to pick up the stick on this idea. Just throwing it out there. However, the image below should give a good idea of what WUER might entail... (update: if anyone has some free hosting space for this, or wants to pay for a shortwave slot, i'm talking myself into this)

I like the idea. Maybe we could have one or two regular hosts, and every week they could have a different co-host.

But I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves here. Do we have any volunteers for regular hosts?

I like it. Even if Av isn't interested you can get in touch with me as I have substantial bandwidth available for hosting massive audio files.

Will it be available to those of us who don't yet have level 3 status?

Well since Av probably won't host it, it'll be available to all. the only problem is that doing a live broadcast would require bandwith and all sorts of whatnots...unless you know how to do it, there's money involved. on the other hand, it would be easy to whip out a prerecorded show for download every so often...thought this would take the real fun out of it...no explorer call-ins and whatnot. shortwave is too expensive too. keep thinking for me though.

I don't know how well it would flow, but you could do a prerecorded show with call-ins. Just post an announcement that was like, "I'm recording this wednesday from 6-7, if you want to be on, call in, it will be available for DL thursday morning" something like that. I dunno, just a suggestion.

Maybe you could do some sort of live podcast/shoutcast/real stream where you would have call-ins, and make the show available for download the next day.

Using Skype it might be possible to do interviews cheaply. The only drawback would be that you couldn't do live shows. But you could put a show up for download, then collect the questions and have those answered next week.

Pre-recorded interviews are still fun - my favorites are on these sites:

But please don't make it too hightech. I know RealAudio and mp3 - I have no idea what Podcast is.

A Podcast is basically a large mp3, designed to be downloaded onto Ipods and listened to as if it were a radio show.

If this does happen, could it be in mp3 format? I hate RealPlayer so goddamn much.

I'm starting to look into this more seriously...but it will definately not be in mp3. I may have found a way to do live shows as well.

Not everybody knows how to play OV though. And it sounds like Pook has a streaming idea up his sleeve.

Ok everyone, I'm working out a way with another user to at least test out a system. Chances our we'd be able to handle 50 listeners with the server scheme we've got up our sleeve, but we'd like to have another server around toronto, for obvious reasons. if you've got one and want to help, let me know. we're going to try out some different formats and whatnot for a week or so before we officially launch/drop the idea. so let me know if you've got a server that cud handle say, a shoutcast (one of our ideas) stream live for 50-60 listeners in the great white north. i should have more concrete plans soon. anyway, i'm off to break in a new coverall. keep you posted.

uhm. we sort of did a radio show once.. CUER (in canada, radio callsigns start with C) and we recorded it in a real radio station with Ninj and Av... and it was put on the site. altho it was fun to do this, the time it took to produce was about 4 to 5 hours in all.. i can see a monthly radio show, but weekly would be asking too much i think.

Since I work in real radio, I was able to aquire use of a studio and editing tools to produce the show... and if this were to happen on a regular basis, i would probably be able to provide the service again,... but.. not quite as frequently... maybe monthly would be good?

I was just thinking of shoutcast. I know quite a few people who do talk shows and the like through there. Web streams aren't hard to do. Just have to deal with a little lag sometimes.

I'm not talking about anything elaborate. Each show would only be 1 hour. They would definately not be weekly...either monthly or bimonthly, depending on response. Shoutcast is what I'm looking into right now, and I've already got one guy with a decent server. The show would be live, basically call ins, and very lo-fi. I'm looking into it, and I'll see if it's feasable.

What you could do so everyone could listen, would be to have a server that can hold 25-50 people, and have the people who listen to the original stream be ones that will participate and call in and the likes, then for the more shy of us, we could download it afterwards? That way we dont all have to fight over being one of the 50 listeners.
