I highly doubt this is new information to many here, but I stumbled across it today, and thought I'd toss it out there for general elucidation.
I never totally understood the system used to mark utilities, but I figured there was some rhyme or reason to it. Today I found this, the color code from the Utility Location & Coordination Council of the American Public Works Association.

* RED - Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables
* YELLOW - Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials
* ORANGE - Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit
* BLUE - Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines
* GREEN - Sewers and Drain Lines
* PINK - Temporary Survey Markings
* WHITE - Proposed Excavation

This could be quite handy to know at times.
