I don't carry anything that identifies me.
The most interesting thing that I carry that might save me in a police situation is a small notebook filled with my notes on human anatomy and physiology, poems, map drawings of drains, and anything else I find interesting (I want to be a surgeon someday) I could pull off being a very interested college student or whatnot.

Also if I ever ran into anyone that wanted to start trouble ("rare insane homicidal" squatters ot tagers.) I study the human body enough, I could take them out with a well placed blow.

...I'm concerned about the bulk and weight of architectural books though. Many of them are extremely unsuited to field work....

The book I mentioned is supposedly "pocket sized", and if you have a big-ass pocket I suppose it would be. It is backpackable and doesn't take up much space or weight. Pamplets from your local histortic preservation council or copies of newspaper articles regarding certain buildings work, too.

Not even a drivers licence? I'd carry at least that--in the unfortunate case that you do get caught, not having any sort of ID can be the difference between a police officer just blowing you off as some idiot with a camera and sitting in the back of a squad car while the officer radios HQ to make sure you are who you say you are, which is an annoying hassle. I speak from experience.
