One of my biggest fears while exploring is getting locked into a room, stairwell or anywhere really. Since many places such as asylums or jails are meant to confine people, it is usually smart to check the doors before they shut behind you. However, getting locked in somewhere is very possible and I was just wondering what would be the initial ways you would try to get out?
Tips: not freaking out, checking the windows, kind of lock for pick-age, vents, attics/ceiling crawl spaces, contacting someone else cell phone or2 way…what else?

If you can't get out after trying for a while, call someone. That's why you should always bring a phone.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

im all about not breaking stuff etc. but if its you or a door, im sorry the door loses. of course thats a last resort, i would highly suggest trying to find another way out because there often is. also lock picking is a very useful skill to have. also if your exploring with 2 or more people have 1 person go in first and see if they can open the door from the other side. and finally a cellphone is always a good idea

If it's just a blank hallway with self locking doors (there is one out there waiting for me), first it's phone, then door, and last resort if the doors won't take any of your antics (really really heavy duty doors) I guess would be kicking the crap out of the drywall untill it gives. Agreed, I'd probably start to panic and take the door out pretty quick.

Its happened to me. I'm still not sure how I got out because panic set in. All I remember is that I couldn't break the door down.

i got locked in a stairwell before and all i remember was running up and down the flights checking the same doors over and over. The person i was with had an old skeleton key on their key chain and lucky for us it worked.

I brought this up in another forum once, in regards to "Student Traps" in my university's tunnel system. Basically they're short sections of tunnel with two doors, both of which open inwards to the trap, and are locked from the inside. The traps are supposed to have alarms and/or phones in them. When I was caught my freshman year, the cops said something to the effect of "There are one-way doors down there that you can get stuck behind, and we wouldn't find you for a few days".

I've seen these firsthand and have talked to some explorers who got stuck in one (they were drunk and stupid), so I'm pretty careful about checking doors. So far I've never been stuck anywhere that I can recall, I think if if happened I would first look for an alternative, then try to defeat the lock, then as a last resort try to break out. Calling for help may or may not be an option, I don't own a cell phone and sometimes explore well outside of cellular range.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

If the door is a self-closing one, I usually take a quick look what kind of latch it is and try the handle from the other side while the door is still open, to make sure I can get back out. Another method I use is to have someone go through and close the door, then try and open it. If it locks, the person on the other side can open the door. Putting something to hold the door open also works.

If stealth isn't an issue, I usually just play it safe and tape the lock open.

Well the first thing to do obviously is to check the door/lock first. Then I would put something in the door just incase. I remember one time I was headed into a basement of a factory and my stupid ass forgot to check hte door cause it was propped open, suddenly behind me I hear "slam" and everything goes completly dark and I hear "wonder if this door locks" from the other side. Luckily there wasn't even a latch but ever since then I've made sure to check doors. A cell phone is great but in a lot of structures you won't have any signal so they can damn you in the end. Never rely on a cell phone to get you out of a bad situation, always have a plan B. I also once fell through a floor into the basement of a factory and didn't have a light, I could see using my lighter (which I prefer not use in buildings just incase) and it took me a long time to find a way out. oh yeah, I wasn't hurt except for a banged up leg and lots of scrapes and bruises, I was more worried about getting out. Eventually I found something on the complete other end of the building which required me to walk on a cat walk with nothing but a dying lighter for light. I got out though and all was well, I went back got my flashlight and explored the rest of the basement. I also learned to always keep a small backup light safely secured in a zipped or buttoned pocket that night too.

UEL got locked in a building once, as much by our own stupidity as the fault of that damn broken doorhandle. Now the cops ended up showing up shortly after we discovered the door wouldn't open from inside and getting us out anyway (and we got busted for the first and only time) but that was just luck. The first plan of action we had was to use my cellphone to call friends of ours who could come and open the door for us. Failing that, we would have kicked out a board over this other door that had a massive hole in it. Normally we're totally against damaging things in any way, but I see an exception in this case especially since kids are breaking down the boards all the time anyway. Failing both of those, we would have had to decide if we wanted to break a window/kick the door down or call the cops or somebody to get us out.

Really though if the cops hadn't appeared anyway, we could have gotten away with using my cell to call a friend to open the door. Destruction of property isn't cool. A cellphone though is a vital piece of kit to go UEing with in my opinion, as well as telling at least one trusted friend/family member/whoever where you're going just in case of something like this.

Watch for doorhandles though and check all the doors. This door was made before single-side locking mechanisms were even invented, but the handle on the inside was broken. I check all doors now just in case...

Yeah, the strategy really differs depending on the situation. If you're in a place that's highly used (say, infiltrating a hotel and you get stuck in a closet or a back hallway) then you don't really need to think along the lines of, "what am I going to do?" It would be more like, "what am I going to say when someone shows up?"

There is a whole different set of concerns, though, if you're in a situation like Freak mentioned (getting stuck in a tunnel system, where people might not find you for days) or like Bizurke mentioned (falling through to a place that perhaps wasn't meant to have an exit). Then, depending on what kind of explorer you are, there's always the possibility of being in a lonely abandonment somewhere that *nobody* ever goes.

In all of these cases, the best way out is to have someone (friends, police, serial killer, etc.) get in the same way you did -- usually, open the door from the other side. If you can call out to these people (by cell phone, by yelling to them, by signaling some other way) then that's the best. A backup method is to always tell someone where you're going and how long you're going to be there. Tell them not to freak out if you're an hour or two late (we've all had explorations run over) but let them know that if you're five or six hours gone, you'd like them to start checking around. Depending on the situation, that might mean anything from going to the place and checking to see if your car is still there, to actually going inside the place and looking around. And, as always, if it gets serious, calling the cops should be an option that you consider.

If you're not comfortable telling people where you're going, do what I did when I left for one particular potentially dangerous exploration: leave a note in your room with the relevant information on it -- where you're going, how long you'll be there, who to call if you don't come back, that sort of thing. Then if you, say, fall and break your leg and you can't move, you know that people won't waste valuable time, say, checking your friends' houses or trying to guess where you might have gone. They'll go into your room, read the note, and go right to where you are.

And, as always, these are fairly rare situations and they can be avoided by exploring in groups, bringing a cell phone, propping doors, etc.

If, worst case scenario, you're trapped in a room that's nothing but a door and four walls, and nobody knows where you're going, and nobody is likely ever to find you, then pick the most likely place and try to bust your way out. As someone mentioned above, use your flashlight (or the hardest thing you have with you) to punch a hole in the wall and pull apart the drywall. Or do the same thing with the floor or the ceiling, if you can reach. It will take time, but at least you won't be dead at the end of it. Ethics are no good if you're dead.

And if you try all of this and you are still trapped with no hope of escape or rescue... well, damn, I guess you're screwed. Find some way to write on the walls and say your goodbyes, or make a great picture for the next urban explorer who comes along and finds your body/skeleton.

If you get locked in a (fire) staircase of an active high rise, you can usually just walk down to the main lobby level and out. I had that happen once. I went inside a staircase of an office building and forgot to check the handle on the other side. All the levels were locked so I had to walk down to the main level, which was the only level that was unlocked. One of those 'note-to-self' instances.

I learned the hard way, on one of the rare occasions I was doing some solo-exploring. I eventually was able to slip out of a metal gate thing that I could barely bend open enough to slip out before it sprang back. Now I ALWAYS check to make sure every door works from both sides, even if another person I'm with has already checked. I can remember a few times where if I hadn't checked the door handle and noticed it is locked from one side, I would have been trapped for quite some time before anyone found me. And yeah, cell phones are great when you aren't underground or in a drain.

I have gotten locked in rooms before, student traps, like Freak mentioned, but I always got bored and kicked the door off the hinges(wasnt too strong of a door) and went on my merry way.(only ever did this at my highschool) I dont by nature carry my sledgehammer with me but I did wweld some stripes of steel to the casing of my old maglite and use that to knock things around if I got trapped/locked ect..
