Breaking vs. Just entering

Do you actually *break* into buildings, or just enter through already penetrated entrances?
I think it's really important for us to not break windows and stuff, or at least get rid of some evidence of our tresspassing. When security/cops see a door opened, they know someone opened it and therefore increase security to make sure it doesn't happen again. This might mean that they just pay more attention, it could mean that they board up the area you entered through, or it could mean they hire more security, install cameras, or install alarms even. Please, don't make it obvious because it will ruin things for everyone in the future!

Most explorers do not cause any damage to the sites they explore, including entrances. Ethics and respect for property are what separate explorers from common vandals. If it appears that the only way in is by breaking something, it's always better to look harder or come back another time. Often time and the elements (or vandals, etc) will make an entrance for you.

This has been discussed in depth several times before, a search will give you quite a bit more information.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Freak pretty much said everything I would have said. Personally I'm alright with forcing open stuck doors and the like, but only if you're certain things can be put back exactly as you found them. This includes it being preferably just as difficult to enter as it was before you were there.

I don't know if it has been discussed on the forums, but I've talked to other explorers before about the "parasitic" nature of UE, where we take advantage of entrances made by vandals... but that's heading OT and makes for good after-UE-dinner conversation, hah.

Finding a backyard basement boarded window with the board previously removed by someone else (like in this pic) is as far as I'd go. I've been tempted to "break" but doing so means forever crossing a line. So far, I've only "entered" and never "broken"...

If you do take something off make sure that you put it back on just as or better than you found it.

I mainly go through entrances that were already opened by other people, or had already been wide open.

Only once I had to break to get in. This extremely large abandoned house had it's boarding nailed back that had been on the ground the first time I went there. I had to pull it back down, but managed to replace it when I left.

Spent the evening talking to my Swat team uncle about this very point.
according to the law, the second your body passes into a building, whether you broke in or walked through an open door, constitutes break and enter.

However, the formal charge for break and enter reads "break and enter with intent to ^insert random indictable offense her^"

Therefore, unless you enter a building to steal, smash or otherwise conduct illegal activities, you're fine.

see that little momento in your pocket?
That's all the police need to bust you with break and enter with intent to steal.

Walk away.

I have no problems with prying or otherwise "jimmying" my way in. The big No-no's as far as I'm concerned are leaving it obvious to others (increased security), damaging the historic parts of said site (I don't give a rats ass if new plywood has pry marks), and making it easier for idiots to get in. Basically, I don't want to fuck shit up. If I remove something I try to put it back.

If you look hard enough, there is almost always a less obtrusive way to get in. Sometimes it takes more work and even more risk, but that's fun too!
