|  | | | I'm looking for some advice about this tunnel here in philadelphia. Myself and a few others once walked, hunched over for near an hour without reaching anything substantial. I don't really explore tunnels very much for i like to stick to buildings. Well, lately, I've had the urge to go back there and give it another go.
So, my question is this: how long or far would some of you frequent tunnelers push on?

I am not a drainers per say. If I can stand in it I'll go all day. Those back breaks though I just can't enjoy as much. Im a 30-1hour kind of guy. I just need a skateboard or two and I'd be happier.

| | | | For starters I'm not sure that we're talking exclusively about drains here as the original post said tunnels which I interpret as a whole range of different things. Some crawlspaces, cavities, steam and utility tunnels are indeed quite small, especially when full of pipes and shyatt. Those usually go somewhere so I'll crawl quite happily for quite some ways.
In terms of draining the smallest I've ever attempted is a 375mm, which for you backwards imperial folk is probably on the order of 15". It was ridiculously tight requiring me to shift my shoulders and pelvis diagonally, I only went a few feet before calling it quits. The possibility of getting stuck and hypothermia due to the cold concrete (this was mid-Canadian-winter) were big concerns. I do intend to go back in warmer temperatures and after consulting our local caving club on how to avoid getting stuck and how to get out if I do.
Why would I go down a 375mm pipe? The answer is simple, there's a huge bricked up underpass that's only accessibly by jackhammer, master locksmith or crawling through this drain into a manhole in the middle of the sealed off road. Its a worthy cause, a realtively short squeeze and just plain hardcore.
The moral of course is that without that fore knowledge I would never contemplate a 375. You have to be reasonably sure there is some sort of reward waiting for you to do something like that.
Ask someone from Sydney Cave Clan about the Eye of the Needle. Oh fuck, that's small.
In terms of unknown tunnels my limit is about 1200, there are several places in Calgary drains where 1200 pipes lead to interesting things and in terms of comfort it really isn't that bad for short distances. More than half an hour and you can forget it. Of course with something like a drain board a 1200 can be quite enjoyable. I'm proud to say that within the ranks of UEA at least, I go the lowest. ;)

| | | | I've slithered the better part of a city block on my stomach over sharp rocks and slimy residue (likely left by sewage overflows) through a seam in bedrock (formerly a tunnel) that eventually led into a tunnel system. Others that I was with actually continued down the slither tunnel for several more full blocks worth of distance and ended up discovering that the slither tunnel was yet another connection to a different place that is really neat (and has several entrances, all of which are unpleasant or tricky in one way or another).

| | | | Wow, you guys are all hardcore. I'll present the opposite extreme... I hate drains and I'll only go in if I can walk upright. I only go in smaller drains when somebody else drags me along. The reason is, I have a really bad back (I may be young, but I've been a sloucher my whole life, and it grew into a really bad hunchback. I'm almost constantly in pain, and I don't need to spend any time in backbreaker drains because, frankly, my back is already broken.

| | | | I recently visited a medium sized group of abandoned structures that had various utility tunnels connecting the basements together. The basement was flooded about two feet deep with water, but it had frozen into clear, solid ice. What normally would have been a walking height tunnel (with waders or tall boots) was not a stoop/backbraker tunnel with a perfectly flat ice floor. I could crouch down and just scoot along, using the walls for balance.
It was the easiest time I have ever had with a tunnel of that size, and I highly recommend it if you ever have the chance. Just be careful that the ice is frozen fully or at least more than thick enough to safely support your weight. Breaking through the ice in a tunnel and then having to crawl back out and find help would not be fun.
Oh, one of the basements (which was also flooded and frozen) had jet black shiny ice instead of blue-clear ice. I traced it back to a toilet in a dilapitated bathroom that had a slow sewage backup (it was gurgling even in the dead of winter). Basically, I was standing on concentrated frozen sewage. It was interesting to say the least, and I made sure to wipe my boots off on some cleaner surfaces after passing through and exiting via a different frozen tunnel.

My limit depends on the tunnel and how likely it is to go somewhere cool. Somewhere like Satan's cave I'd be willing to crawl up every little side passage just to map it fully. Under UAF I went through most of the small tunnels and mapped out every little squeeze and crevice (well, I did leave a few inter-building crawl tunnel unexplored). Under the Buckner building, where there were some awesome void spaces linked by tiny crawl tunnels, I didn't full explore due to asbestos.
Basically, if it's passable and goes somewhere good, I'll do it. I may have to come back with kneepads and gloves, but it will get done
